Live a life worth living…while you have life to live.⁣

This summer, I drove by myself to Independence, CA, to work at the Mt. Williamson Motel and Basecamp, an establishment that specializes in resupplying hikers backpacking the JMT and PCT. This trip was more than just spending time in a place I love; it was a journey of discovery, forging new relationships, and making plans for my future. ⁣

This experience was a wild ride—one of my most fantastic adventures yet, and one of the most uncomfortable things I’ve done. I really pushed myself outside my comfort zone. However, doing so helped me rediscover my confidence, and even though the scariest is yet to come, I know all will be well. Actually, more than well. It’s going to be f-ing awesome!

Stay tuned!

Do you wonder how many calories you need to fuel your backpacking adventures? Backcountry Foodie has a new tool to help you out with that.

It's FINALLY here! Our one-of-a-kind hiking calorie calculator is now available to not only our members but the public! 🥳

https://backcountryfoodie.com/hiking-calorie-calculator/

We spent an entire year building the most comprehensive hiking calorie calculator available online.

❓Why was this such an enormous project❓

1️⃣ The problem with most online calorie calculators is that they do not include the variables necessary to create a reliable calorie estimate. Wide ranges of estimates were a common theme.

2️⃣ Many of the calculators available calculate calories burned while actively hiking, not calories needed for a 24-hour time period, significantly underestimating the hiker's calorie needs.

3️⃣ We read the research, gathered a list of complex calculations elite athlete dietitians use, and created a calculator superior to anything currently available.

Our calculator generates a more reliable estimate that you can trust.

Go give it a test drive. You're going to love it!

Wow. Just wow.

Wow. Just wow.

Danae and Olen Netteburg and their five children, aged two to 14, are currently midway through completing the Pacific Crest Trail after the family already hiked the Appalachian Trail and Continental Divide, clocking up thousands of miles.

The Bridge of the Gods is an iconic crossing over the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. It’s also the official route of the Pacific Crest Trail.⁣

The Pacific Crest Trail Association and the Port of Cascade Locks, which owns and operates the bridge, are advocating for a new lane for foot and bike traffic. People on foot often share space with semi-trailers and log trucks. Leading a horse over the bridge isn’t realistic, so stock is usually trailered across. A new lane will improve safety for pedestrians, horseback riders, and cyclists who want to experience both sides of the Columbia River and the PCT.⁣

With this petition, the PCTA and the Port of Cascades Locks are seeking $6 million each from the states of Oregon and Washington to begin the work necessary to add the new pedestrian lane, paying for seismic improvements, a structural analysis, and the overall planning and design. This state funding will move the project to a construction-ready phase and allow stakeholders, including the PCTA, to engage regional partners and advocate for project funding with local communities, Congress, and the Federal Highway Administration.⁣

August 2023   We the undersigned support state funding for seismic and safety improvements to the Bridge of the Gods across the Columbia River between Cascade Locks, Oregon, and Stevenson, Washington. This funding, which this year received unanimous bipartisan support of Oregon’s Jo...
