This mural was painted on one of the overhead doors of the shops located underneath the Tower Terrace in the Pagoda Plaza this past May. The man painted in the mural holding the checkered flag was a random photo taken during practice last May by a IMS Photographer.
The man is Craig Weidner, my former neighbor when I lived in Parc Bordeaux apartments in the early 2000's. In the second photo is his son Chad, who is also a friend of ours AND who we just so happened to bump into this afternoon right in front of the mural...like how mind-blowing, right?!
Both are longtime IndyCar fans and have been attending the 500 since 1992. They're both hard-core Penske Racing fans and are always, ALWAYS stationed in the stands behind the Penske pits...all day every day. The photo taken of Craig was last May while he was sitting behind the stands on his cooler smoking a cigarette.
Sadly Craig suffered a stroke a couple months ago and has severe limited mobility of his left-side and confined to a wheelchair. And as big a fan as he is, and despite having many of us willing to help him out and bring him to IMS, he's just not ready yet. This was his son's Chad first day out at IMS, and as such the first he learned of the mural.
To take an even bigger twist, as we were standing there talking in front of it, a lady with IMS came up to us and learned the story. She then added that she knew the artist and had access to the original photo and confirmed that it was indeed Craig and then proceeded to offer Chad info on how to follow up.
The Indy 500 has been and will always be far more than just a race.
