Every Town Has a Story — Starksboro, Vermont 🌲

Starksboro may look like a quiet rural town today, but 200 years ago it was a surprisingly busy little industrial community.

Chartered in 1780, Starksboro was named for Revolutionary War hero General John Stark. The first permanent settlers arrived in the late 1780s, and by the early 1800s, mills and small industries were popping up along the town’s streams.

Here’s a fun fact: by 1860, Starksboro had 1,437 residents—the second-largest population of any town in Addison County. The village had a foundry, gristmill, sawmill, carriage shop, hotel and even a butter-tub factory.

Today, Starksboro is known for its farms, maple sugaring, forests, Lewis Creek and its beautiful rural landscape.

📍 HAVE YOU BEEN HERE?

Tucked along Route 106 in Reading are the Indian Stones—two historic markers dating back to 1799.

They commemorate a remarkable story from 1754, when Susannah Johnson and her family were captured during the French and Indian War. Susannah gave birth to a daughter during their captivity, and years later had these stones placed to mark the locations connected to their story. The stones were later mounted together in 1918.

It’s a little roadside stop with a big story.

Peru, Vermont once became a Hollywood movie town! 🎬

The 1987 movie Baby Boom, starring Diane Keaton, was filmed right here in Peru, which stood in for the fictional town of Hadleyville. Parts of Peru’s village were transformed for the movie, including a gazebo that was built specifically for the film.

We had no idea until we started exploring this place!

Every Town Has a Story — Bristol, Vermont 🌲

Before it was Bristol, this town was called Pocock.

Chartered in 1762, Bristol’s first settlers arrived in the 1780s. In 1789, the town’s name was changed to Bristol, likely after Bristol, Rhode Island.

One of Bristol’s most unusual landmarks is Lord’s Prayer Rock. In 1891, Dr. Joseph Greene had the Lord’s Prayer carved into a large rock along the road. He reportedly stopped there while hauling logs and would pause for a prayer before continuing his journey.

Today, Bristol is known for its beautiful downtown, the New Haven River, outdoor recreation, and its location at the “Gateway to the Green Mountains.”
