When I was starting photography, I reached out to some photographers for some advice or if they would be interested in mentoring me.

Most didn’t respond or was rude. There were some really great photographers who gave me great advice and I can’t thank them enough!

I swore I would never be the gatekeeper photographer and I would always lend a hand to those who needed it.

If you’re interested in photography I have some advice:

- Photography can be a great hobby but the business aspect is a lot more than a hobby and is something you should really prepare for.

- Practice, practice, practice before you charge! You’ll need to make sure you have your focus down pat, you know your settings by heart, and you’re out of auto mode. I personally prefer manual or aperture priority settings.

- Quality lenses will make a huge difference. Kits lenses are expensive but very cheaply made. You can get great images with kit lenses but they pale in comparison to a quality lens. Lenses make a way bigger difference in photography than your camera body. Especially in equine photography I highly recommend a 70-200mm f/2.8 (action shots) or a for portraits an 85mm f/1.8 (or lower). Anything smaller in lens length than that will distort horses and make them look out of proportion.

- Be prepared for lots of overhead costs. It’s not as simple as picking up a camera and immediately starting a business. You’ll need a business license, an EIN number for tax filing, insurance, a photo delivery website (Pixieset costs about $40/month), a photo editing software (I use Lightroom and photoshop and it costs over $20/month).

- I highly recommend you spend a lot of time studying lighting, focus, and aperture. Especially if you’re doing portraits. Lighting can make or break a photo and you’ll need to study how to best work with all types of lighting.

- Reach out to other photographers. It’s intimidating but you will find someone out there willing to help you and guide you. I know that if it weren’t for a few really great photographers, I wouldn’t be where I am at all.

- Photography can be inconsistent. You’ll need to prepare emotionally for the times where you’re not booking, the off season has put a hold on everything, shows don’t sell the way you’d planned (if you’re doing horse shows).

If you’re dreaming of photography and being a photographer, this advice isn’t to discourage you. It’s just to give you the things that I wish I had known before diving into photography. I was one of those people who picked up a camera and thought, “hey this is a great business opportunity!”, and truthfully it was the best thing I’ve ever done. I always imagined a life of working with horses and I’ve always loved taking photos. However, I was very under prepared when I started. If you’re passionate and willing to take the good with the bad, you will do just fine and my inbox is always open.

The Tri-State Equestrian Connection show is unfortunately cancelled due to storms. I’ll catch y’all at the next show and I’ll be back at TSEC on October 3rd!

Due to severe thunderstorms moving through our area and continued unsafe conditions expected overnight into tomorrow, we have made the difficult decision to cancel tomorrow’s horse show.

The safety of our riders, horses, volunteers, and families is always our top priority, and with the current weather forecasts we cannot move forward as planned.

We know how much time and preparation goes into getting ready for a show, and we truly hate having to make this call. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and support.

Our make up is scheduled for October 24th!

Thank you for understanding and please stay safe!

Keeping your horses mind, body, and spirit in tip top shape is so important. Bodywork is a great way for all of those things to get a little extra attention.

My own personal horse, Amigo, is the model in these shots. He is a young Thoroughbred that came off the racetrack last year. He didn't come without his faults physically as racing took a huge toll on him. Jessi-Lyn Reuter of LGM Sporthorses & Bodywork stepped in to help his body feel a little more at ease from the hard years of racing. Amigo was loving every minute of it and his expressions were some of the coolest I've ever seen.

Check out Jessi for all of your bodywork needs! She also travels!! She helped Amigo feel like his best self with essential oils, working his fascia, and using a massage gun on him. As you can tell, he really enjoyed it and I'm sure your horses will too!!

Orders are being sent out for the Miamitown show!

Thank you to everyone who has ordered!

I just wanted to share this gorgeous photo of Caressa and her beautiful horse!
Its so easy to get caught up on all the action but these are the moments that truly mattered. You all showed your love for your horses. I noticed so many people giving neck scratches and pats down the homestretch or just taking a quick moment to love on their horses.

If you haven't ordered yet and are wanting to, the link can be found here: https://marissaellisphotography.pixieset.com/miamitown/

Miamitown! Your photos are up now!

There were a lot of riders, so there are a lot of photos! They are in the order of go but are only categorized by barrels and poles.

All of you are new to my photography and how I do things. Photos are totally unedited. When you make a purchase, I will edit the photos ASAP. When they are finished you will get an email with your purchase. Lighting, straightness, etc.. will be fixed :) lighting was actively changing as I was shooting due to cloud coverage so some photos may be darker or brighter but I can fix those issues.

I am offering a package of 6 photos for $50 or all photos of a horse/rider combo for $100. Use the code MIAMITOWN at checkout (must have at least a total of 6 photos in your cart for the discount to work). If you choose to purchase all of your photos, you must contact me so I can sort!

Thank you so very much for having me out and I hope to see you all again! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.
