Life is like a camera
Just focus on what’s important
Capture the GOOD TIMES
Develop from the negatives and if things don’t turn out, just take another shot.

Museum's top star, troubled by far ...

Coming to Amsterdam almost feels like visiting an old friend, and few reunions are as memorable as standing face-to-face with Vincent van Gogh's famous self-portrait at the Rijksmuseum.

Painted in 1887 during his time in Paris, the work captures Van Gogh's intense gaze and evolving brushwork as he searched for his own artistic identity. Despite creating some of history's most celebrated masterpieces, Van Gogh struggled with profound loneliness, mental illness, and financial hardship throughout his life, selling very few paintings before his death at just 37.

Seeing this portrait in person is a powerful reminder that behind the brilliant colors and expressive strokes was a deeply troubled artist whose work would only be fully appreciated after he was gone.

Quiet morn, hope reborn ...

A quiet morning settles over Amsterdam's canals as the first rays of sunlight cast a warm glow across the water, with the Anne Frank House standing in peaceful reflection along the Prinsengracht. In the stillness of dawn, the scene feels both serene and deeply reflective, inviting a moment to pause and remember the history held within its walls.

A visit to Amsterdam would be incomplete without visiting the Anne Frank House, one of the city's most meaningful and moving landmarks. Located along the Prinsengracht canal, it is the preserved building where Anne Frank, her family, and four others hid from persecution during World War II, and where Anne wrote much of her now-famous diary between 1942 and 1944.

Morning spark, leaves its mark ...

View of Amsterdam's Brouwersgracht Canal, photographed from the Oranjebrug.

As the sun rises over the still-sleepy streets of Amsterdam's Jordaan district, most of the city is just beginning to stir. Meanwhile, a few of us are already out chasing the quiet magic of perfectly calm canal reflections.

Rise with a grin, let sunshine win ...

As the sun rises over Amsterdam, golden light bathes the Egelantiersgracht, its still waters perfectly reflecting the glowing sky and historic canal houses in serene beauty.

First rays arrive, city's alive ...

Bathed in the first light of day, Amsterdam's Koepelkerk has watched over the Singel Canal since the 17th century. Its distinctive copper dome and perfect reflection make it one of the city's most elegant hidden gems. It was built in 1668–1671 as a Lutheran church for Amsterdam's growing Lutheran community.

Narrow widths shine, saving tax dime ...

Situated off the Open Havenfront (body of water that separates Amsterdam Centraal Station from the historic city center), the canal houses are among Amsterdam's most photographed buildings and are centuries old. Most date from the 17th and 18th centuries, during Amsterdam's Golden Age, when wealthy merchants built elegant, narrow homes and warehouses along the waterfront.

You might wonder - why were such canal houses built so narrow?
Taxes were based on the width of the façade. During the 17th century, property taxes were often tied to the width of a building facing the street or canal. Merchants minimized their tax bill by building tall, narrow houses that extended far back into the lot !

First light arrived, canal came alive ...

At the corner of Herenstraat and Herengracht, elegant 17th-century merchant houses overlook Amsterdam's most prestigious canal. Bathed in sunrise light and reflected in the calm water, this quiet corner beautifully captures the timeless charm of the city's UNESCO-listed Canal Belt.

Timeless reflections, renaissance connections ...

This prominent canal house (corner of Prinsengracht and Brouwersgracht) illuminated by morning sunshine in the upper right, is a protected 17th-century canal house built in 1641–1642. It is one of Amsterdam's finest surviving examples of an early Dutch Renaissance canal house, with matching stepped (trap) gables facing both canals.

Also pictured here is Lekkeresluis bridge (brug) which dates from the early 17th century, when Amsterdam undertook its famous canal expansion known as the Grachtengordel (Canal Belt). The Brouwersgracht (canal in foreground) was dug around 1612, and bridges such as the Lekkeresluis were constructed to connect the rapidly growing western neighborhoods with the new canal system.

At that time, the Brouwersgracht was lined with warehouses, breweries, and merchants' homes. In fact, the canal's name means "Brewers' Canal," because many breweries operated here, taking advantage of the easy transport of grain, barrels, and beer by water.

Reflected past, memories built to last ...

In early morning light, Amsterdam's Prisengracht canal lies perfectly still, transforming into a shimmering mirror that captures the elegant 85m tower (Westertoren) of Westerkerk (Western Church) rising gracefully in the background.

Built between 1620 and 1631 by architects Hendrick and Pieter de Keyser, Westerkerk, a protestant church, stands as a symbol of the Dutch Golden Age. It holds tremendous historical weight as it is the resting place of the Dutch master painter, Rembrandt van Rijn (buried there in 1669), and is situated right next to Anne Frank's House (in her now famous diary, Anne Frank mentions the bells of Westerkerk being a comforting presence while she was in hiding nearby during WWII).

Not to mention that the Dutch painter Jan van Heyden captured this church in his famous piece "View of the Westerkerk, Amsterdam", which is noted for its masterful play of light, shadows, and crisp canal reflections.

Dutch by design, reflections divine ...

Damrak is one of Amsterdam's most iconic streets, connecting Amsterdam Centraal Station to Dam Square. Lined with elegant 17th- and 18th-century canal houses, it provides a stunning introduction to the city's rich architectural heritage. At sunrise, the historic façades and mirror-like reflections transform the canal into one of Amsterdam's most picturesque and photographed urban vistas.

When in Amsterdam, don't forget to do a canal tour or two!
