Expect the Unexpected

One of the greatest lessons Yellowstone has taught me over the years is simple: always expect the unexpected.

Just over a week ago, I stood near this same stretch of the Yellowstone River photographing a grizzly bear. Today, the river offered an entirely different encounter—a magnificent bull moose, antlers towering above him, calmly making his way through the water.

Moose are relatively uncommon in Yellowstone—fewer than 200 are estimated to live within the park—and rivers, lake shores, and marshy areas are among the places they may be found. That makes an encounter like this all the more special.

This is why I never head into Yellowstone assuming I know what the day will bring. You can wait hours for one animal that never appears, turn a corner, and suddenly find yourself witnessing something completely unexpected.

Last week, a grizzly. Today, a bull moose. Tomorrow? That is the magic of Yellowstone.

The Reward of Patience

Six hours.

That’s how long I had spent watching a bison carcass, waiting for Yellowstone to deliver one of those moments wildlife photographers hope for. Six hours of watching, waiting, and wondering if something might appear.

Nothing did.

Eventually, I packed up my gear and started the drive home, accepting that sometimes Yellowstone simply makes you put in the time without giving anything back.
But Yellowstone apparently wasn’t finished with me yet.

As I traveled along the Yellowstone River, I suddenly spotted a large male grizzly stepping into the water and beginning to cross the river. After spending the entire day waiting for an opportunity, there was no hesitation. I pulled over, grabbed my camera, and hurried to the river’s edge.

For the next few moments, everything happened quickly.

The grizzly pushed through the cold water, his massive body mostly hidden beneath the surface. Then, for a brief instant, all that remained visible was his head—ears raised, eyes forward, water breaking around his face as he powered toward the opposite bank.
I managed to capture a couple dozen images before the encounter was over.

Of all of them, this is my favorite.

There is something about those eyes staring directly across the water and the simplicity of the composition that captures the power and determination of a grizzly without needing to show his enormous size.

Wildlife photography often teaches you that the photograph you spend all day waiting for isn't necessarily the photograph you come home with.
Sometimes you can wait six hours for nothing…

Sovereign Gaze

There are moments in wildlife photography when the animal does more than simply allow you into its world—it acknowledges your presence.

This bald eagle offered one of those moments.

Perched against the muted landscape, it stared directly into my lens with the unmistakable confidence of a creature that belongs exactly where it stands. There was no movement, no dramatic flight, no struggle for survival unfolding before me. There was simply that gaze—steady, intense, and completely commanding.

When I began working with the image, I decided to remove nearly all the color, allowing the eagle and its surroundings to fall into shades of black, white, and gray. But I left one element untouched: the brilliant yellow of its eyes, beak, and talons.

That small amount of color changed everything.

Against the monochromatic portrait, the yellow becomes almost luminous, drawing you first to the eyes and then through the details of the eagle itself—the weathered feathers, powerful talons, and unmistakable white crown.

For me, “Sovereign Gaze” isn't simply a portrait of a bald eagle. It is a portrait of presence, strength, and quiet authority—a reminder that sometimes the most powerful wildlife encounters happen when absolutely nothing needs to happen at all.

And sometimes, the most powerful statement in the wild is made in complete silence.
