Some of my favorite photographs aren’t technically perfect.

Sometimes a child is covered in paint.

Sometimes they’re making weird faces.

Sometimes they won’t sit still long enough for the “perfect” portrait.

But honestly, I don’t think childhood is supposed to be polished.

The magic is usually hiding inside the personality.

The missing teeth.

The dramatic expressions.

The obsession with sunglasses.

The way they climb into your lap when they’re tired.

The way they look at you when they’re proud of themselves.

Years from now, those are the details families ache to remember.

Not perfection.

Presence.
