Jamestown Justice Coalition hosted the third No Kings protest on 3/28 at Dow Park in Jamestown, with around 400+ people in attendance, despite the frigid weather. For this particular protest, JJC raised money to help replace the stolen statue from the park, donating it to the YWCA Jamestown.

"Dow Park is both the birthplace and spiritual home of the JJC. We have had over 20 rallies and gatherings there over the last 5+ years. We see it as part of our responsibility to take care of and give back to this place. Sadly in 2021, one of the statues dedicated to the Jamestown abolitionists Catherine Harris and Silas Sherman was stolen from Dow Park. There has been a group trying to raise money to restore this statue for a number of years. During No Kings Rally March 28 we will be collecting donations for this effort. We felt this was very appropriate for this rally since the most important IMPACT we can have is LOCAL. All contributions will be appreciated."

Unlike previous protests, no counter-protesters were present this time (during 11-1pm), aside from Greg with his usual livestream. It was reported that he was a fan of the lineup for this event, which included folk music, a monologue by Emily Drew from the play "A bright room called day", and callback song for the attendees to participate in. Aside from that, there were a couple of passerby's with their vehicles trying to stir of reactions, but again, it was mild compared to past events, and not nearly as enthusiastic with their passion or insults - half middle fingers peering up from the corner of their passenger window, or some unintelligible grumblings at protestors. All in all, a warm and welcoming community of passionate and activated individuals, hopefully leaving this event a bit more connected more connected to the community, and feeling a bit more recharged for the fight ahead.

We had been in NYC during the weekend after the tragic murder of Renee Good a few days prior. Given the rising tensions, protests had been taking place all weekend, organized by local unions, advocacy groups, and political groups like the DSA. This particular protest was on a Sunday, just missing the freezing rain from the night prior, coupled with a lovely winter breeze. This was by far the largest march I had ever participated in, and candidly, quite rejuvenating. Its easy to feel a sense of despair and isolation when you are at home alone, staring at a screen and hearing about all of the horrible things taking place in our country. Fellow people in community serves as a beautiful antidote to despair, and a reminder that we are not alone. Aside from a single counter-protester (that everyone just flipped off in passing... I also found out after the fact that he had a prominent presence on social media), it was truly an amazing experience. So many folks had quite "creative" signage, and others simply played various instruments for people to sing and dance to while we marched on. Also saw so many people in the neighboring building watching from their windows, smiling and waving, some even crying. We had walked from Central Park to Times Square over the course of an hour or two, and from my own anecdotal estimates, guessed that there were well over 10,000 people in attendance. If you are looking for a way to get involved, and ever get the chance to join a protest march in a large city, I would highly recommend it.

I had the privilege to photograph Madness Most Discrete's next local project, "Sound and Fury", which is a reimaging of the Shakespeare play "Macbeth".

This presentation is happening in an unconventional space - the upper bowl at Jamestown Skate Products, downtown Jamestown. I believe this may be the first time that a play has been presented in this space as well, which is an incredibly unique opportunity for this community.

“In ‘Macbeth,’ Shakespeare uses the supernatural to illuminate human greed and evil. The story is full of magic and murder,” Drew said. Madness Most Discreet is a New York-based professional theater company dedicated to producing bold, engaging works that challenge audiences to think about the world around them.

Show is tonight at 7pm, 207 Pine Street, 2nd floor.

During Les Ballet Afrik's dress rehearsal, I had captured a number of interesting shots of the company dancer, Kya Azeen, and felt that these would make an interesting series on their own.

Jamestown Dance Festival

08/25/2025

Hi friends! This page hasn't been particularly active over the past few months, but as many of you are probably well aware, I am extensively involved with the planning/marketing of the 2nd Annual Jamestown Dance Festival. It's quite wild reflecting on the fact that we are already in the second year of this festival... But all the stress and time spent has absolutely been worth it, seeing the community that has been built around this festival, featuring world-class dance talent and dance companies that we have welcomed into our home of Jamestown NY.

For those who have appreciated the type of photographic work that I do, you will find yourself at home during this festival, aesthetically. We are featuring a wide range of genres this year, with "Afrikfusion", created by Omari Wiles and his company Les Ballet Afrik, to Odissi and Bharatanatyam with Sri Thina Dance and Sukanya Burman. To west-african/afro-fusion with MahataMmoho Collective. And lastly, but not least, original contemporary and modern choreography with Grace Gibbons and Star Larson.

If you haven't purchased a ticket yet, Festival Passes are still available through August 31st, and the tickets for each performance date can be purchased up until the start time - though I would suggest not waiting if you think you would like to attend.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. Otherwise, I really hope to see you there!
