Crossbow Harvest
On October 16th, 2026, 8-year-old Pendleigh harvested her first whitetail deer. She is in the 3rd grade and attends Oakman Elementary. Pendleigh watched this buck with her dad all summer in Fayette County, Alabama. She and her father didn’t get into the shooting house till after 4 o’clock; they had been in the stand for about an hour when her soon-to-be trophy 9-point entered the field with several other racked bucks. Pendleigh’s patience was tested as she had to wait for the trophy whitetail to travel 80 yards across the field to get in range for a shot. Their trail camera showed that he had been in there that morning and came back again to feed. As they got in range, she had to wait for all the other bucks to clear as they kept stepping between Pendleigh and her trophy. The time came when her shooting lane was open, and she found the 9-point trophy in the scope of her crossbow. Pendleigh squeezed the trigger, and the arrow struck her trophy buck just in front of the shoulder as he was quartering to her. Full pass through!!! The trophy whitetail jumped up and ran off the field and hit the ground 25 yards off the field.
This is Pendleigh’s first whitetail ever and first harvest with a bow!! As ATH was obtaining this story, ATH learned that Pendleigh’s father was breathing harder just before the shot than she was, in full anticipation for his daughter to hit the mark and harvest her first whitetail deer. The following morning, Pendleigh got up and began asking when they were going again because she knew there was another one they had been watching that they named “One-Eyed W***y, " due to his one eye from his love of fighting other deer. W***y had been gone all summer, but the day of this harvest, W***y showed back up on camera.
So, Pendleigh, from all of us here at ATH, we are following you closely and rooting for you to harvest w***y and can’t wait to share the story here on ATH when you do, goodluck the rest of the season. - ATH
