A different take on an iconic spot.
A couple years back while I was exploring the Central Adirondacks, I realized I hadn’t been to Buttermilk Falls since I was a little kid, to the point where I couldn’t really remember what the falls really looked like. I figured it was worth stopping by and after doing some scouting upon my arrival I realized the Milky Way core would rise right over the falls that night, conveniently with the new moon in phase. I bailed on my sunset plans that evening and decided this idea would be worth attempting* to shoot. I figured I could just crash at the lean to down river and go to bed early, wake up around midnight, shoot the falls, then maybe start hiking to catch the sunrise I had planned. Right before I fell asleep that night I remember seeing a couple lights popping up in the forest, thinking they were headlamps.. a few minutes went by and the number of headlamps grew by the dozens, eventually realizing they weren’t people, but instead there were tons of fireflies lighting up the forest around me. So enchanting - that alone was worth the trip out there. My alarm went off a few hours later, but I was pretty slow to get up. By the time I made it over to the falls, set up, and fired my first exposure, I realized I was a tad bit later than I needed to be. The Milky Way core was a lot higher in the sky than I predicted. I was really psyched on the idea of this shot so I decided I would need to come back again to make it happen. It took another year for me to get back there, this time with a much swifter current to stand in and clouds of mist rising in and out of the core, but thankfully this time I was able to work around that and pull off what I had envisioned. As per usual with more complex astro photography, the night sky stack and blue hour foreground was a nightmare for me to blend together (I ain’t no ) so I pushed off the processing for another time. Another year went by and yesterday I finally decided to give it a go. I almost quit a few times and the blend still isn’t perfect, but I’m satisfied enough with the result. Hope you enjoy 🌌
