My sister and I enjoyed this beautiful sunrise from our campsite this past weekend. It was our first time camping together since we were kids - I think she’s hooked!

The Adirondack Guide

As we rowed across the lake, I began to dream about all this beautiful guide boat has seen in its lifetime, a lifetime more than five times that of my own. In those moments I traveled back in time: A lantern at the bow guided our way. Underneath a hound rested after a long day of flushing grouse. We sat upon a glorious bounty. The creel was full of brook trout and the pack basket filled to the brim with fiddleheads and morels. The stars danced all around us as they reflected in the water, wiggling with each ripple. Swollen brooks bellowed down the mountain walls and poured into the lake. An overwhelming sense of purpose took hold. As we rounded the last corner our destination came into view. The windows of the camp glowed with warm candlelight and smoke curled out the chimney. Soon these old leather boots would be off, freeing my sore feet. Just need to toss a couple logs in the stove and do it all again the next day. Oh, to be an Adirondack Guide.

False hellebore, a telltale sign of spring.
I always enjoy coming across these plants early in the spring when there still isn’t much that is green among the forest. I’ve never been big into black and white photography, but I found the absence of color in this image really accentuates the beautiful patterns and textures of this plant. I hope you enjoy.

A different take on an iconic spot.
A couple years back while I was exploring the Central Adirondacks, I realized I hadn’t been to Buttermilk Falls since I was a little kid, to the point where I couldn’t really remember what the falls really looked like. I figured it was worth stopping by and after doing some scouting upon my arrival I realized the Milky Way core would rise right over the falls that night, conveniently with the new moon in phase. I bailed on my sunset plans that evening and decided this idea would be worth attempting* to shoot. I figured I could just crash at the lean to down river and go to bed early, wake up around midnight, shoot the falls, then maybe start hiking to catch the sunrise I had planned. Right before I fell asleep that night I remember seeing a couple lights popping up in the forest, thinking they were headlamps.. a few minutes went by and the number of headlamps grew by the dozens, eventually realizing they weren’t people, but instead there were tons of fireflies lighting up the forest around me. So enchanting - that alone was worth the trip out there. My alarm went off a few hours later, but I was pretty slow to get up. By the time I made it over to the falls, set up, and fired my first exposure, I realized I was a tad bit later than I needed to be. The Milky Way core was a lot higher in the sky than I predicted. I was really psyched on the idea of this shot so I decided I would need to come back again to make it happen. It took another year for me to get back there, this time with a much swifter current to stand in and clouds of mist rising in and out of the core, but thankfully this time I was able to work around that and pull off what I had envisioned. As per usual with more complex astro photography, the night sky stack and blue hour foreground was a nightmare for me to blend together (I ain’t no ) so I pushed off the processing for another time. Another year went by and yesterday I finally decided to give it a go. I almost quit a few times and the blend still isn’t perfect, but I’m satisfied enough with the result. Hope you enjoy 🌌

When the sky goes and does something like this, I’ve found that there’s often not much to say amongst the group your with. Whether you’re completely lost for words, or just need to take those moments in for everything they’ve got.. you just stand there, in this case terribly cold with the wind and ice crystals pounding your face, and embrace the epic nature slap Momma Earth is giving you.

It’s still winter up in the Peaks but not for much longer - until all the snow is gone I’ll keep trickling out some wintry scenes. This one called for some high key processing.
