When salmon are abundant, brown bears can afford to be selective. This bear picked up one fish, decided it wasn’t good enough, and went looking for a better option. Nature has a way of raising standards when there’s plenty to choose from.

I couldn’t decide which composition was my favorite from Mud Creek Falls, so I turned them into a reel instead. 🌿💦

Happy National Black Bear Day 🐻

Every time I see a black bear, it still feels a little bit like magic.

Whether it’s a curious cub, a watchful mother, or a bear quietly moving through the forest, these encounters remind me why protecting wild places matters.

Grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to photograph these incredible animals and for the wild spaces that make those moments possible.

To think I almost let my fear of this keep me from experiencing this.

Most people I told about this trip asked the same thing first:“But weren’t you scared of the bears?”

Honestly? Not really.

The bears felt wild and powerful, but somehow not scary in the way everyone expected them to be. They were just there in their world while we quietly observed. Plus, we had amazing and knowledgeable guides and .

Meanwhile, the thing that actually had my stomach in knots was the tiny float plane ride into camp.

No one asks about that part.

Maybe it hits a little differently when you’re a mom and your brain immediately jumps to everything that could go wrong when you leave your kids behind for an adventure like this.

So glad I didn’t let my fear stop me and looking forward to going back to bear camp one day!

A black bear’s sense of smell is estimated to be over 2,000 times stronger than ours.

Every pause and every lift of the nose means something.

Bull elk often thrash brush to decorate their antlers and show dominance... but sometimes, even nature's best display gets the cold shoulder. She was not interested in his show this time.
