J. Scott Graham

J. Scott Graham Images by J. Scott Graham are enjoyed by millions of people, making him one of the most celebrated and influential photographers of the 21st century.

For three decades, J. Scott Graham has carved a unique path, combining a rare ability to capture iconic images with inventive business acumen to become one America's most celebrated photographers. Utilizing his imagery, Graham creates, manufactures, then distributes his product line throughout the United States and in the Caribbean. Though he works with many state parks, national forests, historic

sites, and tourist destinations to develop an array of items for their retail stores, Graham is most well-known for his legendary photographs of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. "Of all the many beautiful places I shoot" Graham states, "these two parks remain closest to my home and to my heart." Graham has uniquely interpreted and influenced the scenic value of these national treasures, and was the first person to create a coffee table book about the Blue Ridge Parkway. His annual calendars are immensely popular, and he has published more images and sold more products featuring America's two most visited national park sites than any other person in the world. Graham's reach also extends to more tropical locales as some of his most significant work can be found in the Caribbean. From San Juan National Historic Site to El Yunque National Forest, his timeless photographs portray and protect locations of significant world history and lands of immense biodiversity. Scott resides in Johnson City, Tennessee, and has been married to his wife, Cathy, since 1990. They enjoy two sons, Chace and Jackson, a daughter-in-law Lainey, and are expecting their first grandchild.

Bad weather can make for good pictures, but not today!

While enjoying Vehicle-Free Wednesday yesterday in Cades Cove, I came across this little fella who was hanging out with his Mom and walked over to say "hello" before scampering up a tree.

How many black bears do you see in this photo of Cades Cove? The correct answer is zero. That is precisely the number I photographed today in my attempt to capture these creatures on "Vehicle-Free Wednesday."

Getting to this part of the Smokies required a 6-hour-round-trip drive, a 5:45am arrival to secure parking, biking over 25 miles with camera equipment that included long, heavy lenses, and listening to plenty of other visitors tell me they had "seen multiple Mamas with cubs!"

My only accomplishments besides this wildlife-free flower image, were a mostly empty SD card, tired legs, and a sore derriere.

In my 36 years as a photographer, I have found success to be easy, but sustained success to be hard because failure is inevitably part of the journey. It will either cause discouragement, or stoke the flame of ambition. I hope my quests, successful or not, never run out of fuel.

In the midst of unusual springtime drought in the Southern Appalachians, rain has finally arrived in spurts over the last several days, causing mountain streams and waterfalls to reappear ever so slowly. Pictured here is Second Falls in Graveyard Fields from 5/8/26.

Need flowers for Mother’s Day but not the store-bought kind? The Blue Ridge Parkway south of Asheville NC is showing off stunning displays of Carolina rhododendron, painted trillium, and pink-shell azaleas. Enjoy these bouquets, and Happy Mother’s Day!

If you are looking for your favorite wildflower blooms in the Blue Ridge or Great Smoky Mountains this year, most seem to be arriving 7-10 days earlier than normal, then fading rather quickly due severe drought conditions. This also has been (and should be) true for flowers in the rhododendron family: Carolina, Catawba, and Rosebay, plus pink shell and flame azaleas. Happy hunting, and please respect these natural treasures!

Violent, high elevation winds created an out-of-nowhere-fog that swallowed sunrise at the 6,643-foot summit of Kuwohi, so I descended to an equally-turbulent Newfound Gap at an elevation of 5,048 feet. Accessing an eastern section of the Appalachian Trail which was tucked away from the western winds, I found late-blooming bluets enjoying the morning fog.
