It might not be Joliet from Above, but if you were a little kid in the 1980s-90s at the McDonald's on Broadway & Theodore, you felt like you were high up when you played inside Cheif Big Mac.

Joliet's tallest buildings; The Walker Hotel
While very few people may know Joliet's third tallest building started out as the Walker Hotel, many know the name West Pines. Located on the corner of Western Ave & Center St., along the Lincoln Highway, this 140 foot tall structure was originally a posh location to live at as it had a residential side as well as hotel rooms. The hotel was the spot for lodging too when big acts played at the Rialto Square Theater. The Three Stooges stayed here while in town.

Now an apartment building, the story behind its original owners may be more interesting than the fact it was Joliet's tallest building until late in the Twentieth Century. Mary Walker was a pioneering woman in terms of having a voice in a time when women were just being allowed to vote. She inherited a lumber business from her father before retiring in 1921. Building and running the hotel put her in a prominent roll as a business leader in the city. So much so she had what could only be termed as a successful campaign for mayor of Joliet in 1927, when she finished 3rd in a 5 person race.
