St. George Orthodox Christian Church
Kearney, Nebraska
I was bummed that we arrived at 5 PM just as they were starting Vespers. I didn't know what that was but talked to a couple (I think it was the pastor and his wife) going in and they said it would be fine if I came in and took a few photos. I wish I had done a video rather than just still shots because their chanting of prayers was a special experience. The paintings on every wall and ceiling were amazing. This is a cellphone image.
Here's some history...
Early Beginnings and the First Priest (1903–1918)
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a group of Syrian and Lebanese immigrants settled in central Nebraska. With the help of the revered missionary Saint Raphael of Brooklyn, the Orthodox Society of Kearney was organized in 1903.
In 1904, Saint Raphael ordained Nicola Yanney—a local widowed immigrant—to the holy priesthood. Father Nicola became the first Arab man ordained to the priesthood in the United States and the first resident Orthodox priest serving west of the Mississippi.
* Missionary Journeys: Because Orthodox priests were extremely rare, Father Nicola traveled extensively across the Great Plains to minister to faithful scattered across 19 states.
* The 1918 Pandemic: During the Spanish Flu epidemic, public gathering places—including churches—were quarantined. True to his pastoral devotion, Father Nicola brought Holy Communion and last rites to parishioners' homes, eventually contracting the flu and passing away on October 29, 1918.
Church Building and Expansion
Initially, the small congregation worshiped in members' homes and in a remodeled former schoolhouse. In the 1920s, the parish built its first dedicated church building on the site. The congregation continued to grow, relying on visiting priests until they could maintain resident clergy again. In the 1950s, a major restoration occurred to mark the church's golden anniversary, and a new church was consecrated in 1952.
Interior Beautification
Originally, the interior of the church was plain. Years later, the parish raised funds to invite iconographers with Russian roots to decorate the worship space. Artists painted extensive scenes from Christ's life and the lives of saints on canvas, which now adorns the walls of the church, turning it into a sacred space steeped in traditional iconography.
Present Day
Today, St. George functions as an active parish under the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. While it originated to serve Middle Eastern immigrants, the modern congregation is a diverse community of varying ethnic backgrounds. Father Nicola Yanney's legacy remains a profound focal point for the church, famously detailed in the book Apostle to the Plains.
