The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side of the Fence.. or is it?

This goat was not satisfied with the grass growing within its enclosure, but sought the tasty fresh greens found only by poking its head through a barrier designed not to prevent it from having a delicious meal but to protect it from the dangers on the other side.

The owner of the sheep that put up the fence knows the hazards associated with unrestrained freedom. The goat only sees what is tempting to the eyes. This sounds a whole lot like the story of Adam and Eve, doesn't it? Surely they were being held back from greater things. Hmmm.

God gives us guardrails in Scripture, not to keep us from having fun, but to provide us the freedom to abound in all the goodness He desires for His children while keeping us from harm. We are not even bound by a set of laws or rules, but instead have the incredible pleasure of living in the fellowship of His grace and love.

How things appear on the surface may be deceptively inaccurate. If the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence, that’s probably because it’s saturated with manure. Following Jesus in faith is the real deal and He'll give you abundant joy, genuine peace, unconditional love, and eternal life. What on the other side of the fence could possible be better than that?!

I have weathered many personal storms and a few that was weather related. The one that sticks out most in my mind took place when I was about 12 and inside the house pictured here with my grandparents and a great-aunt.

On that summer afternoon after working with my granddaddy in the fields, we retreated to the house when the clouds began to darken. As we sat still and quiet, we heard the winds howling and rain pounding the tin roof. This probably lasted only about 20 minutes and when it had subsided, I went into my grandparent's room where the "slop jar" was to relieve myself. While there I walked to the window and looked outside. The sight remains with me very vividly now over 50+ years later. I could see two very large pecan trees on the ground.

I went back to the living room and asked my granddaddy to come look at something with me. He did and was shocked. When the rain stopped, we went outside to survey the damage. There was a total of 7 pecan trees on the ground, three on one side of the house and 4 on the other, two of which was on the to***co barn. It was clear we had been in the path of a tornado which had gotten the three trees, lifted over the house then dipped back down and got the other 4. This was a day I will long remember.
