On the second day of the one week long September 2023 Kilauea eruption at Halema`uma`u Crater, I drove out to the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, with my dog . After some dinner with Meli, while waiting for the sun to set, I tried the typical spots, but they were pretty crowded. So I decided to venture out from the usual and check out some areas I have never shot from. I lucked out and found some ‘people less’ areas and was able to score some cloudless moments between rolling clouds and short rainy moments. The lava lake had risen much higher than my last visit to the park. This was actually the most lava and fissure activity I have seen in the crater. It was a great show. Later in the night I headed back to a viewpoint with a better angle on the fountaining fissures, but the rain, mist, clouds and people were there also. Because of that I wasn’t able to get any decent shots into the crater. Oh well, I’ll have to be stingy and keep those visuals in my head, to myself… Sometimes it has to be that way.

In the past few days there has been so much amazing content of the Mauna Loa Eruption being shared. Everyone has been busily trying to take advantage of this possibly short lived, once in a lifetime opportunity to see and capture footage of lava spilling from the middle of the island. I’ve seen shots from almost every part of this island that have a clear vantage point of the flow or glow. From Kailua Pier in Kona to Lili`uokalani Gardens in Hilo, from Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park to Waikoloa. So I went out to my typical spots around where I live to see if I could get a composition I haven’t seen shared yet. (Not to say there isn’t one like this out there. I just haven’t seen one.) Here is a view of the flow from one of my favorite parts of this beautiful island…

Last night, day 3 of the Mauna Loa 2022 eruption, my Mom, Aunty and I braved the ridiculous traffic and Hawai`i County Police citation warnings to see the flow from Saddle Road. The flow has now reached just under 4 miles from the highway and is widening as She comes off the slope meeting flatter ground. The ‘gallery’ of people hoping to see this once in a lifetime opportunity was immeasurable. Cars lined along both sides of the highway, up Mauna Kea Access Road and filled both Pu`uhuluhulu and Mauna Kea Recreation Area parking lots. There were 4 patrol vehicles on site near Pu`uhuluhulu when we arrived in the area. Knowing the police would probably be making moves to clear the area I jumped out and took a few shots before hearing sirens and loud speaker instructions directing parked vehicles off the highway shoulder. We then headed back home and drove past cars lined for miles… Although a short visit, it was awesome to see Pele at work with my `ohana.

Pelehonuamea returns to Mauna Loa. After close to 4 decades of quiet, Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano started a new eruption just before midnight on 11/27/2022. In my lifetime this her 2nd event. Currently the flow has exited the summit and entered the North East Rift Zone and has reached a point 10 miles from Saddle Road (Hwy 200). Her last event in 1984, lasted just 3 weeks. This eruption has been predicted to last 1-2 weeks. I hope Her fire show stays around long enough to give some great views without much harm…

Such an amazing experience to watch the sky go from Full Moon brightness with hardly any visible stars, to almost New Moon darkness with tons of stars, and then back to Full Moon brightness. The red hue of the moon at full coverage was so captivating. Staying up till 3:00 am was well worth it. The next opportunity to view a Lunar Eclipse from Hawai’i won’t be until 2025. Can’t wait!

Comet Leonard…
After reading about this comet a couple months ago I had been hoping I would get a chance to see it and possibly photograph it. I went out a couple days ago in search of it but was defeated by cloud coverage. This evening on my way home from work, it was clear skies the whole way. As soon as I parked in my drive way I looked to the southwest but I couldn’t make it out with the naked eye. So I went in the house, grabbed the dog and the camera and went out to the backyard. With just one test shot I was able to locate the comet. Adjusted my composition and settings for a few more shots and was able to get a couple decent ones before she set behind the ginger and bananas. Maybe not the best location or composition but it was really cool to see her streak through my own backyard…

Dreamlike state… Photographing a colorful moonbow has been a goal of mine’s for a few years. Late last night on a whim I headed out in search of the elusive meteorological phenomenon. Driving through the rain in the direction of the setting moon I kept looking over my shoulder hoping to see the magical arch. As I passed the rain, out of the corner of my eye I could see a faint arch like stripe over the pastures. I quickly pulled over and rolled down my window and there She was…. . Mauna A Wākea to the right with Ka Hei Hei O Nā Keiki (Orion Constellation) sitting between the two. Still stoked…
Mahalo to & for all the tips and inspiration!!!
