My favorite encounters with orcas are always the ones where you can see the gears in their heads turning! This calf was fascinated with the dome port on my camera housing and approached for several close-ups. Even after so much time spent with killer whales, they still find new ways to surprise and amaze me. 🫍

It was our final morning in the Channel Islands for the season and this humpback decided to pull out all the moves! The whale performed full breaches, chin-slaps, tail-throws, tail-slaps, kelping, and pec-slaps in the 45 minutes we spent watching it. Later in the day, we found killer whales too! It was an epic send-off to 10 months of hard work and I can’t wait till we return for “Season 4”.

The Monterey Bay showed off all the things it’s known for today: killer whales, humpback whales, and rowdy sea conditions! 🌊

Thanks to , Captain , and , I got to see the beloved CA51s and meet the CA222s for the first time.

Blue whales may be giant, but they aren’t invulnerable. Scars on this whale’s tail reveal a previous predation attempt by a pod of killer whales—black, linear scars called “rakes”, created by teeth dragged over flesh. We saw this individual feeding among three other blue whales last weekend in the Channel Islands. It’s funny that even on the days when we don’t see killer whales, we sometimes still see the marks they leave behind.

Remember when you were just a little too short to ride that rollercoaster as a kid? That’s kind of what this short-beaked common dolphin reminded me of today.

Saturday’s search for killer whales spanned almost 12 hours and 230 miles - despite ideal weather, we didn’t find any. What we did find, however, was an awesome little humpback that seemed keen to lift our tired spirits! We saw this whale breach close to ~30 times, followed by pec-slapping and tail-slapping. My favorite capture from this encounter was this slow breach/spyhop combo. While the trip may have been unsuccessful on the killer whale front, it’s hard to feel disappointed when you walk away from the day with an encounter like this!

Swipe at your own risk! ☠️🩸 We got to sit in on “hunting school” with the CA140Bs, CA212Bs, and the CA122Ds yesterday as they took turns practicing their moves on a deceased sea lion. That’s right - in all of these photos, the sea lion was already long dead!

The killer whales spent close to 90 minutes tossing the carcass around, likely using it as a training opportunity for younger pod members. Sea lions are feisty, agile, and have a mouth full of sharp teeth… but this way, the calves are able to safely learn the ropes of taking them down without risk of injury.

Later on, these whales were joined by CA137 “Hercules”, CA40 “Xena”, CA39 “Athena”, and the 122Bs - totaling around ~20 killer whales!

Pinch me, I must be dreaming. 🥹

This past weekend was filled with so many incredible moments with killer whales! On Saturday alone, we had 4 separate encounters totaling around ~30 individuals. My favorite capture (perhaps ever) was this close pass from CA27E after a successful sea lion hunt.

For anyone wondering how this photo was captured - NO, I was NOT in the water! This was taken from a camera housing held over the side of the zodiac.

Today’s killer whales were indeed KILLER! ☠️ This mixed group containing members of the CA122s and the CA212s made three successful kills throughout our time with them, resulting in lots of happy and well-fed whales. Breaches, tail slaps, above-water vocalizations, pec slaps, porpoising, and several impressive spyhops… you name it, we saw it, all in gorgeous conditions too!

We found the CRAZIEST-looking dolphin I’ve ever seen while offshore today! 🤯 I can only guess that this is a “WHOLPHIN”: a never-before-seen hybrid between the finless Northern right whale dolphin and a killer whale. I’ve heard of wholphins before, but never knew I’d be lucky enough to see one myself. April 1st really is the BEST day EVER for unbelievable sightings!
