Duchess, she was quite a dog. We found her at the Hawaii Island Humane Society and she was the best dog for us. The Vet thought she was about 3 years old when we adopted her, and she lived with us for about 13 years. She loved our girls and would sleep with them and "guard" them with all her little body. She would do all she could to keep us from waking the girls up in the mornings! She loved to follow me around the house, like my little shadow and sit right beside us when we would sit on the couch. In the last 3 years of her life, she developed a neurological disorder that made her tilt her head and walk to the right. She continued to follow me around the house even though she would often slip and fall trying to navigate the slick tile floors. She wouldn't give up doing what she could until the very end when her poor little body just would not do what she needed it to do. Duchess, was one of those dogs that wouldn't give up or let life get her down, no matter how difficult it was for her.
At this time of year, I want to remember her and all other pets that give us comfort, peace, laughter, and brighten our lives with their love and devotion. I am grateful for pets.
