Walt Thirion Photography

Walt Thirion Photography Southern Utah based photographer who strives to give form to his emotional connection with the desert southwest and the ice at the ends of the earth.

On one level, a photograph is nothing more than spots of ink on paper or various colored pixels on a monitor screen but the real value of a photograph is the emotion it invokes in the viewer; a catalyst for one to feel nature rather than just being a passive observer.

Landscape photography has long been associated with the sublime, the romantic and the poetic. For many photographers, the natural landscape represents a source of inspiration, a place of spiritual renewal, and a site of deep emotional connection. The landscape can evoke a wide range of feelings and moods, from awe and wonder to tranquility and peace. In this context, the concept of Equivalence, formulated by Alfred Stieglitz and expanded upon by Minor White, can be seen as a powerful tool for expressing and conveying the emotional impact of the landscape through photography.

High winds and dust storms can be irritating but they can be great for sunsets! My first time driving on the Extraterrestrial Highway in Nevada when I decided to take the road less traveled.

"Blue Hour Serenity"—There is something about the power of nature that leaves me awestruck. I am constantly overwhelmed by its grandeur, its ability to produce inconceivable colors, and extraordinary organic forms. As an artist, I strive to bring that sense of awe to my work and share it with the viewer.

This image also attests to the quality of the GFX100 sensor and the 23mm GF lens. Captured in very low light conditions late in the blue hour, the image still has very little noise and captures the complex color palette of the sky and the soft light on the rocks.

I've made a few trips to Joshua Tree NP because of these particular rocks. It seems they have a story they want me to tell... so I came back to Joshua Tree to share the lunar eclipse with them and it felt good to be among friends.

While in Itilleq, we had a friendly soccer game between members of our ship and the local residents (they won!). Some locals chose to watch rather than participate. The people in this small village are extremely friendly and invited us into their homes and gave us a taste of the local culture. Seal blubber is amazing!!!

Itilleq is located on a small island around 1 km from the mainland, 45 km south of Sisimiut[2] and 2 km north of the Arctic Circle on the shores of Davis Strait. It had 89 inhabitants in 2020. The main "industry" in the village is fishing and hunting and a fish factory provides employment.
