Documenting experiences is a matter of perspective. The story each image tells is completely dependent on my particular perspective. Where I am in the unfolding of those moments will serve to remind the people there of what took place.

It’s also why I choose to shoot with four cameras. With the swipe of my hand I can reach to grab for a different perspective. While the side of me that loves street photography and photojournalism enjoys the wide perspective and filling the frame with context, there’s this other side of me that loves to focus in close.

Kiefer & Brenna’s hands reach across the table and scoop tea into the pot. She pours the tea and they drink it together as first act as a married couple. He places the ring on her finger. They pour the tea for their parents and serve it to them as an act of honor.

All the parts of these images come together to stitch together this visual narrative of it all. And it’s what I love to do still.

This Saturday I’ll be back with Goeric and Miranda at Powell Gardens for their wedding.

Last year we went out there together in the evening with time to explore. Wedding days don’t always allow for the exploration with schedules and all. So we got to see the space from different perspectives in those last minutes of sunlight.

Photography for me is a mixture of things. Yes, it involves what’s “in the photo”. Plenty of great pictures are great because of the content, but not necessarily the aesthetic reasons. Others are beautiful photos, but the content is almost secondary to the aesthetic beauty. But always, it’s about light. Where the light is and isn’t. Lots of light, little light. Direct light, diffused light. Whatever kind, it’s the key.

Today I’ll be with Alexis & Chris for their wedding and we will look for the light like we did during their engagement session.

Two days before the wedding Evelyn & Rob had to make a decision. Their outdoor ceremony was likely to be rained out.

Knowing the complex floral arrangements for the ceremony and how much of the plan was oriented around the outdoor space, they decided to roll the dice and hope for the best.

Their numbers came up. A perfectly overcast day gave them the right lighting aesthetic to complement all the subtle embellishments they planned. And then during dinner the cloud line broke and the sun broke through, so I drove them in the golf cart to the ridge and they talked about the journey that brought them to this place.

Recently I was discussing with a friend about the sheer volume of weddings I’ve been at in my life so far. It’s staggering to think about sometimes. The hundreds of couples I’ve witnessed on their wedding days. It’s just a bit surreal at times.

People will ask “what are the coolest things you’ve seen at weddings?” Well, that’s probably the second most common question, the first is “what’s the craziest stuff that happens at weddings?” But the answer to former is hard to pinpoint. Trends change. Things I thought were “cool” ten years ago, not so cool anymore. Things that were “unique” five years ago, are commonplace now. Nothing new under the sun, y’know?

Here’s what is cool to me. Whatever it was on that day, big or small. Monumental or mundane. Extravagant or simple. It only happened that one time with that one group of people in that one place. And I was there for it.

Did Matson & Caroline invent the second line exit from their wedding reception? Nope. Were they the first to do one in KC? Nope. Was it the first one I have ever documented? Nope.

But was it such a pleasure to document and make that three block trek with their friends and family from to with trumpet blaring and drum snare snapping? Yes! Even if it was the 100th one I’ve done (it wasn’t), it was their only one. And the only one I got to do with them.

So, here they are on their short journey with friends and family in jubilee as they head to their afterparty.

Last Saturday I stepped back into wedding season with Steven & Nikki. Over 15 years in this and folks still ask “do you still like this?” And the answer is yes. It’s yes because the people. Not the locations. Not the details. Not the styling. All of that matters and it’s impost and fun to take photos of, but it’s not what I love about the work.

What I love is the learning the ways families interact and friends laugh. The songs they sing along to. The stories they tell.

Before they even walked down the aisle, Steven & Nikki had hours of time together with their loved ones and with each other. They capped it off with drinks together before getting to the venue. It meant they got real time to look into each other’s faces and laugh and talk and be together.

It wasn’t intentional that their wedding would fall on the solar eclipse. There was all sorts of other intentionality. The traditional elements from Isaac’s Jewish heritage. Symbols and design that Bailey brought in with her own creativity.

There was a celestial event that day witnessed by millions. We witnessed it too on the roof of . But inside the building shortly after was an event that will be marked by them and the ones they loved.

Last weekend I was working at my shop and had the pleasure of running into 5-6 couples that I’ve been given the honor document their wedding (also, one groom who was on duty for the KCFD making sure everything was safe).

Paolo & Naomi were one of those couples and it made me want to revisit their wedding day. Their plans shifted several times, but ultimately ended with this delightful, bright, intimate and joyous experience among friends and family.

Honestly, do yourself a favor and if you ever see these two out in the world, try and become their friends. They are both effortlessly cool and incredibly kind. All day their wedding was easy going and also just a blast.

Each wedding day is a unique window into dozens of converging stories. Relationships and traditions on display. Swirling around all of it is this longing to enjoy it. To make sure you actually have a good time while you manage putting on this monumental event for the people you love.

No one was gonna stop Tom & Marit from doing exactly that.

Thanks for the assist on this one, especially that overhead church shot.

An evening in KC with Lauren and Matthew. Lauren’s sister got married years ago and I was fortunate to be her wedding photographer and now I get to be Lauren’s.

While documenting the weddings of siblings can remind me of just how old I am, the honor outweighs that tenfold. Getting to be with these families for these huge moments in their lives, sometimes many years a part is just incredible.

Sometimes weddings sneak up on you. I feel like I’ve been to enough of them at this point that I can get a good sense of what folks are going to be like and what they might do.

Austin & Alison snuck up on me. I didn’t anticipate how emotional their first look would be. I didn’t anticipate just how easily they’d click for portraits. I didn’t anticipate that they would be the couple to get on stage to lead their friends & family in a sing-a-long.

I didn’t anticipate it all, but I’m glad I got to be there for it all.

My phone reminded me that two years ago I was in La Jolla, California on the side of the sea to document Alex and Amrit’s wedding.

I decided to go back and look through their photos again and remembered how much I enjoyed this experience. absolutely knocked it out of the park planning this intimate and beautiful wedding.

I hope I was able to find the story in the details, the touches, the family, the tradition, and the way they all shared it together.
