Into the Lake: Port Huron, Michigan.

Two countries. One bridge. And about 600 feet of steel sliding right between them.

The Blue Water Bridge is where the St. Clair River ends and Lake Huron begins and every ship heading north has to pass through this gap to reach the open lake. From the shore it's impressive. From behind her at altitude, you see the whole story: the wake still churning, the bridge towering overhead, and nothing but Huron waiting on the other side.

This is one of my favorite angles I've ever caught at the bridge.

Where's the best place you've watched the ships come through?

Southernmost Wave: Ka Lae (South Point), Big Island.

This is the southernmost point in the United States, and the Pacific doesn't let you forget it.

There's nothing between this coastline and Antarctica. The waves that hit here have been building across open ocean with nothing to slow them down, and when they finally reach the rocks at South Point, they explode like this. The color you're seeing is real, no filter, no editing trick. That turquoise happens when the water is deep and clean and the sun hits it at just the right angle as the wave folds over itself.

Standing here, you feel very small in the best way.

Have you made it to the southernmost point?

Great Blue Heron: Pensacola, Florida.

This guy didn't flinch. Perched on a post at sunset, completely unbothered, like he owned the whole shoreline. To be fair, he probably does.

Great Blue Herons are one of those birds you see all the time but rarely get to study up close. When one actually holds still long enough, the detail is incredible, the plume feathers trailing off the back of the head, the texture in the chest, that look in the eye that says he knows exactly where the next fish is.

What's the most patient wildlife subject you've ever photographed or watched?

Pilot Boat: Lake Huron, Michigan.

You're looking at a handoff most people never notice.

An international ship entering the Great Lakes picks up a pilot, a licensed mariner who boards the vessel and navigates her through the rivers and channels. Once she clears the St. Clair River and reaches open water on Lake Huron, the pilot's job is done. That small boat racing alongside? That's the Huron Spirit, pulling up to take the pilot home.

This plays out right off the Lexington shoreline, sometimes close enough to watch from the beach. Hundreds of these transfers happen every shipping season, and almost nobody on shore knows what they're seeing.

What's a detail about the Great Lakes that most people don't know?

Resting Honu: Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, Big Island.

She wasn't bothered in the slightest. Pulled herself up onto the black sand, let the waves lap at her chin, and stayed exactly like this for as long as she wanted.

Punalu'u is one of the few places in Hawaii where you can reliably find honu hauled out on the beach, and the black sand makes the moment feel completely different from any other turtle encounter on the islands. You notice details you'd miss on a white beach: the volcanic sand collecting on the shell, the gold in the scales, the texture of everything.

Have you visited Punalu'u? Did you get to see the turtles?

Not every boat on the river is a 1,000-footer. Tugs like this one keep the whole system running.

Bamboo Forest: Pipiwai Trail, Maui.

The moment you step into the bamboo forest, everything changes. The light drops, the air cools, the wind moves through the stalks and the whole forest sounds like it's breathing. Photos don't capture the sound, but this is what it looks like when you stop on the boardwalk and just look up.

The Pipiwai Trail climbs up the side of Haleakalā through some of the most surreal terrain in Hawaii. This stretch through the bamboo is the part nobody forgets.

If you've hiked this trail, what hit you first, the sound or the light?
