Each evening, egrets, herons, and ibis would roost in these trees on the shore of a small lake. As soon as the sun began to dip in the sky, they drifted in. Sometimes individually, other times large groups would swoop in. New arrivals brought lots of squawking and rearranging as they competed for the best perch.

More continued to arrive throughout twilight, their numbers swelling well above a hundred.

Golden sunset over Indian Lake in Tiger Bay State Forest, Florida. Drive less than 10 miles inland from Daytona Beach and you're in the wild. Florida is full of little gems like this.

One thing that RVing has shown me is how certain plants can define a region. In the four corners, I can't help but think of endless pinyon-juniper woodlands. Pinyon pines (Pinus edulis) and Utah junipers (Juniperus osteosperma) cover millions of acres in the southwest. This photo was taken in Arches National Park, where they're as ubiquitous as the red rocks. At lower elevations in the Southwest and in West Texas, the vast olive green creosote seas come to mind. Now that I'm in Florida, I'm surrounded by palmetto prairies.

Plants that I didn't even know existed a few years ago, I now consider old friends and a welcome sight when I return.

A great blue heron silently searches for dinner, while keeping an eye on me. Soon after this capture, the heron lifted its giant wings and emitted a prehistoric cry as it took to the air.

A signature plant of the deep South and of swamps, Spanish moss is no moss. It's actually a tiny bromeliad: Tillandsia usneoides.

The rootless, epiphytic plants form large masses that drape from the limbs of host trees. But it's not a parasite. It gets what it needs from the air and absorbs water and nutrients through its slender scaled leaves. High humidity is essential for it to grow and it thrives in bald cypress swamps.

The last moments of the day are always the most magical. As the sun sinks in the sky, it sets the Spanish moss aflame and transforms the swamp into a dreamworld.

Floating among the cypress trees on Caddo Lake has been surreal. It's easily one of the most beautiful places I've been.

A cedar waxwing takes a break from gorging on berries in Grand Teton NP.

If you want to attract cedar waxwings, plant berry producing shrubs. You're almost sure to see them in the fall if you do. At least in the NE. A flock descends on my parent's serviceberry tree every year, and they gobble up every berry!
