Crossing the Hackensack

A Newark-bound Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) train is seen crossing the Hackensack River between Jersey City and Kearny, rushing commuters home after their work day. The bridge was built in 1900 by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) as part of their main line to Exchange Place terminal. Rapid transit service began operating over the bridge in 1910, after significant PRR traffic was routed via the North River Tunnels to Penn Station. Shared operation between the PRR and the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad lasted until 1961, when the PRR closed Exchange Place, and since then the bridge has been used solely by H&M and later PATH trains. Classic American Railroading

Five years ago today, Amtrak train 3 - the westbound Southwest Chief - is seen splitting the semaphores near Bernal, New Mexico as it climbs the steep grade through the mountains. The semaphore signals and associated telegraph wires give this scene such a classic feel! I was in Denver for a week and opted to take a day to drive to New Mexico to shoot these last few surviving semaphores, knowing their futures are uncertain and that they could be removed at any time. Ten hours of driving for three photos was well worth it!
