Big Trees by the Beach

The "Beach Train" is a tourist attraction in Santa Cruz, California operated by the Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific Railway (SCBG). The excursion operates on an 8-mile route from the beach boardwalk in Santa Cruz - just steps from the Pacific Ocean - to Roaring Camp depot in Felton - nestled in a forest of (big) redwood trees. The short line has multiple interesting features, but today we're focusing on the beach boardwalk end with a couple shots from a visit in July 2025. Individual captions with each photo.

An Island Paradise in the City

It would be very easy to lose track of the world outside the brightly-colored walls of the Rockaway Beach Surf Club while enjoying the tacos, refreshing beverages, and good vibes within, so thankfully every fifteen minutes or so a subway train rumbles past overhead to remind you that you're in fact still within the boundaries of New York City!

In this scene, New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) R46 no. 6004 (Pullman-Standard, 1975-1978) is the lead motor on the passing A train, bound for Rockaway Park-Beach 116th St Station - nearly 32 miles from where the train started in Inwood, Manhattan.

Nine Lives!

The 9 service is a former subway service that operated skip-stop service paired with 1 train, from 1989 to 2005. While intended to shorten trip durations on the Broadway-7th Avenue Line local service, the skip-stop pattern also doubled wait times at most stations, whereas eliminating the 9 would increase the travel time by at most 3 minutes for riders from the furthest north stations. 9 service ended on May 27, 2005, with the 1 taking over all local stops from 242nd St to South Ferry. The 9 bullet was briefly seen on the south end of a 1 train on May 10, 2026 - nearly 21 years after it was eliminated - running in revenue service between 242nd Street and South Ferry.

Puerto Rican Passenger Rail

The Tren Urbano is a 10.7-mile rapid transit system consisting of a single line with 16 stations serving greater San Juan, Puerto Rico. The system began operation in 2004 and there are multiple proposals for expansion of the Caribbean's first rapid transit system, though none have timelines for implementation as of yet.

What better time to share photos than while I am visiting the Island of Enchantment again!
