Engine through East NY

New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) R52 locomotive 73 is seen leading a work train through the complex web of track and structures at Broadway Junction Station on the BMT Jamaica Line, returning from a job site north of Crescent St Station. A structure painting project is also underway on the Jamaica Line, with sections of the structure still in faded and chipped paint, some sections in gray or even red primer, and others in fresh new dark green paint. 170 Years of Illinois Central Commuting, 100 Years of Electric

July 21st is a double anniversary for the electrified commuter service in Chicago:

In 1856, it was the first day of regularly-scheduled Illinois Central commuter service from Hyde Park to Chicago!

In 1926, it was the first day of electrified commuter service on the same line! (electric equipment was introduced gradually, fully taking over service by August 8)

Here we see outbound Metra Electric District train 115, led by Highliner II car no. 1247 (Nippon Sharyo, 2012-2016), arriving at Van Buren Street Station, deep in the trench along Grant Park. The Highliner II cars are the third generation of electric multiple unit that has operated this service, after the IC Highliner cars and the original heavyweight electric cars manufactured by Pullman. Victorian Transport

The Douglas Bay Horse Tramway is a 1-mile line that operates along the Promenade in Douglas, Isle of Man. It dates back to 1876 and has operated continuously since then, despite threats of closure as recently as 2016.

In breaking news, it was announced today that it was voted to approve £2.5 million in funds to rebuild the tramway line to the Sea Terminal! The line ran as far for most of its existence, until reconstruction works on the Promenade truncated the line to Villa Marina.

Two Years Ago Today: New Haven on the Housatonic

The Roger Williams was a 6-car experimental trainset built by Budd for the New Haven Railroad in 1956. The cars were a variant of the company's widely successful Rail Diesel Car (RDC) diesel multiple units, with the end two cars featuring locomotive-style cabs - a feature no other factory RDCs had. After a few years in service between Boston and New York City, the trainset was split up and intermixed with the rest of the railroad's RDC fleet and continuing on through Penn Central and Amtrak operation before being retired in the 1980s. Three of the six cars were preserved by a private owner at the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH, and in 2023 ownership was transferred to the Berkshire Scenic Railroad Museum in Lenox, MA. On Saturday, July 20, 2024 the cars were hauled by the Housatonic Railroad from Lenox to North Canaan, CT for display during the annual Canaan Railroad Days event. Knowing the trip with the historic cars would be popular with photographers, the museum and railroad graciously arranged a handful of photo stops along the way during which the locomotives were uncoupled, allowing for scenes with the remaining trainset alone!

2026 FIFA World Cup Champions!

As part of their promotion for the World Cup, FIFA has sponsored multiple full-train wraps on New York City Subway trains! Seen here is one of these trains in A service arriving at 181st Street Station on the IND 8th Avenue Line. This is one of four trains that have one car each decorated with flags and colors of every team participating in the tournament. The remaining five trains are decorated half and half for the five known matches at NYNJ Stadium.

From front to back, the flags on this train are: Spain, Scotland, Saudi Arabia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Australia, United States, Cape Verde, Netherlands, Jordan, and Sweden.

Congratulations to the Spanish team for winning the 2026 World Cup!

This is one of four FIFA wrapped trains, with one car decorated with the flags and colors of each of the teams competing in the 2026 World Cup. This particular train features: New Zealand, Uruguay, Algeria, Egypt, Colombia, Czechia, Ivory Coast, Curaçao, Iraq, and Türkiye.

The Biggest Boys

Union Pacific (UP) 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" locomotives 4012 and 4014 are on display on adjacent tracks at Steamtown National Historic Site, as an extended stopover on the latter's historic tour of the eastern United States. The two locomotives, as well as 23 siblings, were built between 1941 and 1944 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO), initially hauling freight over the Wasatch Range between Utah and Wyoming. The class was retired from service in 1959, being replaced by diesel-electric and gas turbine-electric locomotives, with some being stored in operational condition as late as 1962. Locomotive 4012 was donated to Steamtown, U.S.A. in 1962, later moving to Steamtown NHS along with the entity. It was cosmetically restored in 2021. Locomotive 4014 was retired from service in 1961 and donated to the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, CA, and was displayed at RailGiants Train Museum. In 2019, the locomotive operated under its own power for the first time in nearly six decades, following an intense rebuild by Union Pacific Heritage Fleet Operations forces. In 2026, the locomotive embarked on a coast-to-coast tour from California to Pennsylvania with numerous stops and events along the way. A multi-week stop at Steamtown NHS was part of this plan, which would be the first time two Big Boy locomotives had been reunited on adjacent tracks in over six and a half decades!
