Side hustle income is a roller coaster.

One month the work stacks up and the money's good. Next month the referrals dry up and you're eating peanut butter sandwiches telling yourself it's fine because you bought five jars.

That's not a business cycle. That's why pilots don't quit the day job - you can't leave steady pay for something that pays great in March and nothing in April.

Working harder doesn't fix it. Not depending on word of mouth does.

How many years have you worked for somebody else?

At the end of all those hours, what's actually yours? Usually just next week's paycheck. Nothing with your name on it. Nothing to hand your kids.

I spent 20 years in the military. I'm damn near 60. And I still know what it's like to get the call after two weeks of nothing - "we've got a great job for you." Already bid. Your cut is one fifth.

Same flight you'd have made five fifths on.

That's a whole second job. And it's not the one you wanted.

You wanted to put the goggles on, grab the controller, and fly.

Flying a drone for yourself and flying one for somebody else is the same work.

The difference is who decides what it's worth.

When you're on payroll you're handing that decision - and the margin that comes with it - to someone else. When it's your business, you charge for the work AND the business behind the work.

Same flight. Different math.

Any pilots here made that jump? What was the thing that finally pushed you?

You build a website. You pay someone to market it. They fill it with ads and a contact form.

Then a customer shows up ready to book - and the only option is "leave your name and number."

But you're out flying. So they wait. Then they leave. Then they hire whoever answered.

You're paying for a website AND a service, and still spinning your wheels.
