It is great fun building out my website’s new Field Guide and revisiting several decades of nature beings photographs. Every so often, I come across an old favorite that stops me all over again.

This is a scene I had discovered inside the bleached root system of a beached tree along the shores of Lake Superior: a mother deer affectionately kissing the head of her eagerly adventurous fawn son. I liked it so much I turned it into a photographic study.

I have long wondered when this little tableau was formed. Did the living tree somehow record a scene that once unfolded beneath its branches? Or was the image later crafted by nature beings, energetically working with physical matter?

I don’t know the answer. But I love the question - and the reminder of how much there still is for us to discover.

High atop the only sandstone pinnacle in the area, an alert mountain lion keeps a relaxed, perpetual watch over the desert below. The formation stands beside I-70 in Emery County, Utah, at the site known locally as Ghost Rock.

This mountain lion is a Watcher - calm, powerful and acutely attentive to the landscape in his care. Watchers are beings whose function is to observe and oversee the unfolding of creation, holding that larger pattern rather than directly shaping it.

Here’s a good example of why it pays to shoot in RAW.

RAW keeps the original image information intact, so as your skills grow, you can return years later and reprocess a photograph with everything you’ve learned since.

I photographed the original images of faces in an old cherry tree in 2011. I just reprocessed them for inclusion in my growing online Field Guide - and what a difference 15 years of learning and improved technology can make!

It is a privilege to be granted permission by the nature realm to photograph their artwork. As part of that reciprocal relationship, I feel it is important for us to keep improving our skills so we can present their work as clearly and beautifully as possible.

A large driftwood root at Rialto Beach’s Giants Graveyard ended up in a protected little garden where a lovely green bush with white flowers grows.

Stop by and explore. The Guide is designed as a visual reference, providing photographs, locations and dates as I continue cataloging my 23 years of nature being photography.

Elves... gnomes... angels... guardians... dark forces... and many other beings and forms of consciousness found throughout the natural world.

If you already “believe,” you may appreciate seeing the visual evidence gathered in one place.

And if you don’t believe? Come have a look anyway. You may find that the photographs give you something new to consider.

I recommend that anyone interested in photographing nature beings pay close attention to places that strongly “speak” to you. I’ve often found that powerful events from long ago can leave energies embedded in the land.

Human activity, taking place in the dense physical world, can leave impressions that are difficult for nature beings to disperse. Likewise, higher spiritual energies can remain largely untouched by later human use.

This site was shown to me as an ancient Native peoples’ Vision Quest site. Later, as often happens, people recognized the physical route but not its spiritual purpose, and it became a path between the canyon floor and the cliffs above.

Follow the photographs from right to left and you can trace the original journey - entrance, ascent and, finally, the cliff-top encounter with the archetypal Self.

The black Manhattan schist found throughout much of Central Park is around 500 million years old. This outcropping near Bethesda Fountain is a favorite gathering place, and the rock beings clearly enjoy all the people coming and going. There are smiles everywhere - and even a little lichen heart beside this young couple.

Announcing the debut of my new visual Field Guide to nature being society!

We’ve just added this photographic resource to my website, atalatoy.com.

The Field Guide brings together photographs by topic, with locations and dates, so visitors can explore collections such as portraits of elves, Portal Guardians and other members and structures of nature being society.

Seeing many photographs of a similar subject - alike in certain ways, yet different in their individual details - can create pattern recognition. Over time, this can help people more easily recognize the presence and characteristics of this sister domain.

My twenty-three-year archive now contains more than 100,000 photographs, and I have recently been working to separate individual images into types and categories. The Field Guide is therefore very much a growing resource, with many more beings, structures and subjects to be added in the years ahead.

I attended a Wilding outing on land near Cheyney University, Pennsylvancia. The group was encouraged to connect with nature. There was a lovely black locust tree across the field who was calling to me. When I walked over for a visit, I was greeted by a Sasquatch-like figure and a sweet young doe. What a gentle experience!
