How much fun can one marble column hold?
I was touring the famous Masonic Temple in Philadelphia with my Swarthmore College alumni group and was in awe of its old-world elegance, extraordinary craftsmanship, and masterful artwork. Then my eyes fell upon the details in one of the gorgeous marble columns—and I had to laugh.
There, hidden in plain sight, was a lively gathering of little beings, each with its own expression and personality, enjoying themselves immensely. Some looked amused, some mischievous, and some simply delighted to be part of the scene.
What a treat that visit was in every way. And it struck me that the Masons began as builders—not only of remarkable buildings, but ultimately of community itself. Perhaps that is why their meeting place reflects such care, craftsmanship, and beauty.
