Most people don't picture this when they think of New York 🗽: a 156-foot waterfall 💦 dropping straight through the middle of a small village, close enough that you could grab dinner downtown and still hear it thundering 😲

That's Shequaga Falls in Montour Falls, in the Finger Lakes region 🌲 — and it sits right behind West Main Street. Drive through around dusk 🌆 and it's genuinely startling: the falls glow above the rooftops like part of the town's own skyline ✨

There's real history here, too 📜. The falls' Seneca-derived name, "She-qua-ga," is translated on the 1932 state historical marker as "Tumbling Waters." And in 1820, a young sketch artist 🎨 named Louis Philippe — later King of France 👑 — drew this exact view; that sketch hangs in the Louvre today 🖼️

It's completely free 🎟️, open year-round 📅, and only about 3 miles 🚗 from Watkins Glen State Park, so it's an easy addition if you're already exploring that area.

Is there a better place than this to watch downtown Greensboro come alive for a weekend? 🌅

We've never gotten a swag box or a media badge from NC Folk Fest — we've just been showing up and shouting about this festival because we genuinely love it, and we'll keep doing it either way 😉

What we love most is how NC Folk Fest treats "folk" as an open door instead of one narrow genre — this reel alone spans Sammy Rae & The Friends' horn-driven soul-pop, Mipso's Carolina string-band roots, and Sam Burchfield & The Scoundrels' front-porch Americana, all under the same tents downtown. For the last couple of years, we've built a Spotify playlist featuring that year's artists before the festival even starts, so we can learn their music ahead of time, and every year at least one new one earns a permanent spot on our travel rotation afterward — last year it was Sammy Rae & The Friends 🎶 Full disclosure: Mipso and Sam Burchfield & The Scoundrels were already family favorites long before we ever saw them live here.

Best part of all: it's completely free. Come for all three days, just one, or only show up for the acts on your must-see list — there's no wrong way to experience it.

Our go-to move is parking at the Greene Street Deck. It's usually quieter than the decks right next to the stages, and it puts us walking distance from some of our favorite spots downtown before or after a day of music: Natty Greene's 🍺, Little Brother Brewing 🍻, Chandler's ☕, Northern Roots ☕, Blue Denim 🍽️, and Crafted 🌮. There are plenty of other great spots downtown too — these are just the ones we've personally checked out and can vouch for.

Is there a better place than this to watch a sunset in the Outer Banks? 🌅

Duck Town Park's boardwalk stretches almost a mile over Currituck Sound 🌊, held up by nearly 1,000 wooden pilings 🪵 driven eight feet into the ground. It's an easy, flat walk, but there's a lot packed into that mile: at low tide the water pulls back to reveal the marsh floor 🌾, and along the way you'll pass a painted horse statue 🐴 (part of Duck's public art trail), a hidden garden path 🌿, and a 350-seat amphitheater 🎭 tucked right into the trees. Time it for sunset 🌇 and you'll see why locals call it one of the best sunset spots on the Outer Banks.

Midway State Park has been open on Chautauqua Lake since 1898 — but it's not frozen in time. Alongside the vintage carousel (see Part 1), there's a full lineup of rides that would hold up at any modern fairground:

That's a mural of Lucy and Desi Arnaz painted next to the Ferris wheel at this park — Lucille Ball's hometown is only 12 miles away.

Midway State Park, on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in Bemus Point, has been running since 1898 — making it one of the oldest continually operating amusement parks in the country. It doesn't feel like a typical state park at all; it feels more like stepping into a postcard from another era.

The vintage carousel is still turning. The Little Dipper is a genuinely old-school kiddie coaster. Kids loop an antique car track. And the boat ride is named after the lake towns around it — Chautauqua Bell, City of Buffalo, City of Rochester. There's a skee-ball arcade too, straight out of another era.

You can walk BEHIND this waterfall 🤯

The Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen State Park packs 19 waterfalls into about a mile — stone bridges, canyon walls carved by thousands of years of water, and Cavern Cascade, where the trail takes you right behind the falls:

🌊 Cavern Cascade — walk behind the falls 💧 Rainbow Falls, one of the trail's most photographed spots 🌉 Stone and metal bridges crossing the canyon 🪨 Creek-level walkways at the bottom of the gorge

Not a difficult trail, but expect a LOT of stone stairs — hundreds of them. Plan accordingly and take your time.

Three overlooks, zero real hiking required 🏔️

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area has a paved road that climbs right up to three scenic stops, making it one of the most accessible mountain experiences in North Carolina's High Country:

🌅 Sunset Overlook — sweeping west-facing views across Ashe County 🌄 Sunrise Overlook — the quietest of the three, with lovely east-facing views 🏞️ Jefferson Overlook — the highest drivable overlook in the park at over 4,600 feet, with the most expansive panoramas of the Blue Ridge Mountains

This Buffalo institution pairs its original Greek Revival building with a striking glass expansion — and the collection inside spans centuries of art history. On our visit we walked past works from:

Tucked behind a neighborhood in Eden, NC is a trail most people drive right past — and it's hiding a waterfall and 200 years of history.

🏛️ The stone ruins of the Leaksville Mill, which milled on this spot from 1764 until 1970 🥾 Just over a mile of shaded walking trail 🪨 Rocky bluffs and rushing rapids along Matrimony Creek 🌊 A hidden waterfall with a quiet pool at the base
