From Mandy Lake on the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge. We were able to be there after obtaining a special use permit and permission from the Refuge manager. It was quite the night!

Milky Way, taken on August 18 from the observation platform overlooking Rice Lake at the Rice Lake NWR, about 11pm. We were able to be there after hours because of a special use permit granted by the Refuge manager. The Milky Way was visible across the entire sky, from the northern to the southern horizon. The spots of light and glow across the bottom of the photo are light pollution coming from the south.

Not sure if this was taken at East Twin Lake or West Twin Lake. We were exploring the Lima Grade, from the Gunflint and followed where the dust road took us, a dead end eventually, but the adventure, . . . oh my. Did you know there are State Forest campgrounds that have no fee?

Just returned a few days ago from a camping trip off the Gunflint Trail in northern MN. The coolness of the air was quite a break from the sweltering heat we had been under. Nights were cool, and clear with the sky filled with stars.
