Senior photos with Colin! We utilized the red brick West Martello Tower and surrounding areas of Higgs Beach. I shoot here all the time but usually for families and couples, so having a solo subject means we can really get creative using different areas of the space that are more conducive to a one person shoot. We climbed down onto the rocks, used the texture of the chain link fence around the dog park, utilized the palm tree lined sidewalk, went over to the quiet Rest Beach, and other nooks and crannies around the space. Special thank you to Melanie for entrusting me with Colin’s senior memories!

Spots are filling quick CoffeeMill Dance Studio dancers!

I'm looking forward to not only capturing your portraits, but also getting to practice my own modest tendu, coupé, retiré, arabesque, and everything in between as we get the poses *just* right!

(I was chuckling to myself pulling these BTS shots from past years!)

Sessions will be offered during rehearsals at Tennessee Williams Theatre on the following dates:
• Monday 5/11
• Wednesday 5/13

From ~3pm to 6pm

(see booking link for available times)

Whether your dancer is a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, all ages and experience levels are welcome.

They can come to show off the moves they've learned, the skills they've acquired, the confidence they now have, and - of course - the amazing costumes they'll be wearing!

Limited Spots!

“It’s like glitter on the water” - that’s the effect the light has skimming across the top of the ocean, during a morning photo shoot at the beach. (Case in point, photo #1 of this carousel).

I know that the propensity is to lean more toward sunset for most family portraits, but don’t sleep on morning sessions! if you are working with a photographer like me who has experience shooting in brighter daylight conditions, made possible because of the fact that I shoot with additional lighting…

- - Sidenote… It’s counterintuitive, but actually the BRIGHTER it is out, the MORE lighting your photographer needs to bring with them to get this balanced lighting on you as the subject…

- -

anyway, and then you just have to pick a location, like Higgs Beach, which offers plenty of opportunities to tuck into little shaded spots, such as under a palm tree, or in the adjacent West Martello Tower Fortress.

with the right location, and the right photographer… Wink, wink… You can schedule your family Portraits in the morning, and have the rest of the day to enjoy the island!

shout out to Deepak and Swathi and their family session!

Joel + Halley 💍

Most people picture the gazebo at the Key West Garden Club for a proposal… but just a few steps away, the Banyan tree that calls the ground home has a way of stealing the moment.

That’s where Joel chose to ask.

A little nervous, a lot of heart, and just enough suspicion from Halley to keep things interesting. He got out, “we’ve been going strong for about two years… what do you think about forever?” and that was all it took.

These two have bonded over travel, movie nights, and life with their border collie Ringo… and now have a Key West story to add to it all.

Not a bad first visit 💛

Sophistication at The Saint! This shot is particularly noteworthy from a technical perspective, because this beautiful space is almost completely devoid of any directional lighting. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very cozy vibe for sure, and gives a very warm inviting feeling if you are popping in for a drink at the adjacent bar, or checking in to head back to your room, but from a TECHNICAL perspective, it is very dark.

And you might be thinking “but Karrie, don’t you bring your own lighting?“

Absolutely, in the form of strobes that go off in a millisecond, so they aren’t on WHILE I’m composing the shot and trying to get my focus nailed down.

While I can usually trust my Gear to get me pretty close, the successful ex*****on of any photo DOES rely on me being able to… You know… SEE!? 🤣. The low camera angle added to the challenge since it also meant I didn’t get a direct line of sight into the viewfinder.

For this, I popped out some additional continuous lighting gear, had Morgan hold extremely still, had one light far off camera-right to give it that cool Rembrandt-esque vibe, used a slower shutter speed to allow some of the details to come in from the background, and then did a little light dodge and burn in Post to bring out a little bit more of the bookshelf for the final shot.

What do we think?
