How much do we really know about Maui’s honu? 🌊🐢

We see them resting along the shoreline, cruising over the reef and occasionally popping up beside us in the water—but their lives are much more interesting than those brief encounters suggest.

My newest Maui Journal story takes a closer look at Hawaiʻi’s green sea turtles: what they eat, where they go, how long they can live, the differences between males and females, their remarkable recovery after decades of protection, and some of the places around Maui where we commonly see them.

I also included something I think is important: how to enjoy these incredible animals while giving them the space they deserve.
