While everyone else is still asleep, we’re up early with Gros Pitón capturing a silky smooth long exposure of this ancient volcanic plug at dawn.

Without a tripod, I managed to balance my camera on the pier to capture this shot using a 10-stop ND filter and a 20-second exposure. Gotta get creative sometimes!

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Or in my case, find a different composition that works. The sunset on our “Sunset Cruise” was completely obscured by this lone rainstorm on the horizon. No purple sky and and no dramatic view of the Pitons lit in golden light. But I did manage to spot this interesting boat at anchor and as we sailed by, noticed it would frame up very well in front of the very storm blocking the sunset. A few snaps later and I think I captured one of the more interesting shots of the trip.

Watching the sun set over St. Lucia from the Jade Mountain Club was an incredible experience only surpassed by the dinner we enjoyed later that evening This was an evening I won’t soon forget and the perfect way to wind down our week in paradise.

If I’m ever reported missing, tell the search party to check here first…on this beach hammock, in St. Lucia.

“Thanks for your email. I’m currently out of office…”

Travel photography is all about visiting and photographing the most beautiful places on Earth and Sugar Beach on St. Lucia, flanked by the stunning Pitóns deservedly sits on that list of breathtaking bucket list locations.

Using a 10-stop Kase ND filter I was able to capture an 8-second long exposure of the tide rolling on the beach and clouds gently floating by. Just an incredible scene to experience in person.

After an awesome day cruising around and exploring St. Lucia by catamaran, we returned to our hotel at in time to catch a beautiful sunset from their hidden beach.

At the bottom of the cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea is a small hidden beach with a rocky shoreline and the perfect perspective to capture a long exposure image of silky smooth waves rolling through the rocks. Without a tripod, I found a level surface in the rock face to set my camera and, with a Kase 10-stop ND filer and 3-second shutter delay, captured this stunning scene of a perfect St. Lucian sunset. Pigeon Island is prominently displayed in the background.

Photographing the Pitons from the deck of a catamaran is something I’ll never forget. These twin volcanic spires — Gros Piton and Petit Piton — formed 200,000–300,000 years ago, crystallizing within ancient volcanic vents rather than erupting outward, which gives them their dramatic near-vertical faces.

These iconic formations appear on St. Lucia’s national flag and inspired the name of the country’s favorite local beer. The Pitons were also designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

First day in St. Lucia is off to a great start! Even without my tripod, I was able to use the railing of the hotel pool deck to capture this long exposure (10-stop Kase ND filter) of the waves and clouds streaking by Pigeon Island.

In 1778, the British seized this strategic outpost and built Fort Rodney to monitor the French fleet in nearby Martinique. Four years later, Admiral Rodney sailed from here to defeat the French at the Battle of the Saints — a pivotal moment in Caribbean colonial power. France and Britain battled over St. Lucia fourteen times, and the scattered cannons in these ruins still remain to tell that story.

One of my favorite moments from my two-day photo trip was capturing Monument Valley at sunrise. If you find yourself in this area of Northern Arizona, planning a stop here should be high on your list - particularly for sunrise.
