Lower Catawba Falls // A birthday hike to the Catawba Falls was the absolute best. The lower falls span about 100 feet high with cascades that I couldn't capture all in one photo. Climb the stairs (added for safety to hike to the upper falls) to see the entirety of it. It's painful but well worth it. There's a view of the valley on your way up, and the upper falls have a nice deep-enough pool to cool off in (and rest those sore legs from climbing 590 steps).

Mauna Kea Sunset // Nope, still not finished with Hawaii photos. These are the last ones! This is what sunset looks like from the highest point in Hawaii. Mauna Kea, a shield volcano on the Big Island, boasts the highest elevation in the state of Hawaii, the second highest peak of an island on Earth, and, standing at 33,500 ft tall, is the tallest mountain from base to tip on Earth, though a good chunk of that lies below sea level. But 13,802 ft above sea level is still pretty high for someone from North Carolina. So high, in fact, that at about 9,000 ft, you're asked to acclimate to the elevation for at least 30 minutes at the Visitor Information Station before moving on to the summit. This is also the point where any vehicle that isn't a 4-wheel drive has to stop (thank goodness we rented a Jeep). If you're approved to move on from the VIS, you continue your trek to the observatory (which isn't actually at the tallest point, but who's counting those last few feet?). When you arrive, the view is incredible. And it's COLD. We were bundled up, because the wind chill was below freezing. I had to take a potty break (yay for port-a-johns I guess) and passed a chunk of snow still hanging out in the shadow of a building. And that walk to the toilet? It was a slow walk. If I walked at a normal pace I started feeling a little nauseous and light headed. Elevation sickness is a risk at this high of an altitude because the oxygen level is 40% less than at sea level! It was a weird experience. But so worth it for the view! The second photo is of some of the telescopes. It may also be worth mentioning that Mauna Kea hasn't erupted in over 4,000 - 6,000 years, so it's thought to be dormant. You're safe on the white mountain (from volcanic eruptions at least). 🤙

Bodie Island Lighthouse Sunset // My favorite lighthouse. I don't know what it is that draws me to it - the landscape, the seclusion, the building itself. It feels like an old friend, though we've only known each other for a few years. A ghost that I've grown attached to. I could spend hours listening to its stories - decades of tales about its keepers, its place in World War II, the folklore surrounding its name. It's lit the way for seafaring vessels and camera toting visitors alike for 150 years. It will always have a special place in my heart.

Lava Cliffs // No, I'm not quite finished posting photos. Behind the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa, these lava cliffs are the view you're met with. There were a few evenings with gorgeous sunsets, but unfortunately, we didn't catch any at this location. This is the best I could get, but the scenery is still breathtaking. When the light fades and you move into slow shutter speeds, the ocean and waves become a painting of beautiful blues and whites. I could've sat on these rocks for hours.

Waipi'o Valley Lookout // Waipi'o (meaning "curved water" in the Hawaiian language) is often referred to as the "Valley of the Kings" - it was the home of Hawaiian royalty up until the time of King 'Umi. Thousands of native Hawaiians lived in the valley afterwards until a devastating tsunami hit in 1946. Now the valley is home to just a few taro farmers, fishermen, and others who enjoy a simple life. The overlook is as close as you can get to Waipi'o Valley right now if you're not a resident. It used to be accessible by 4x4s and hikers until the road was closed earlier this year due to road conditions. But driving or biking down could put a real strain on your brakes... the steepest grade on the road is about 45%! Once you reach the bottom, though, you'll be greeted with rougher terrain, but a beautiful black sand beach. This was one of our stops on our "waterfall day" which took us sight-seeing on the windward side of the island.

Akaka Falls // Located in... wait for it... Akaka Falls State Park, this 442 foot waterfall plunges down into a giant hole. Just kidding... it's a stream-eroded gorge. But the views make it look like a pit. The loop trail that takes you to this view is less than .5 miles, though there's elevation change that can make it feel a little moderate. Part of the trail takes you along Kolekole Stream and a few other smaller falls. As a note, it costs to park, and go on the trail, but there IS parking just outside of the main lot that's free.

Crab Cove // From inside the there are plenty of ocean views. This particular one can be viewed from outside of the bioreserve as well. As a matter of fact, you can walk out on this chunk of lava rock if you'd like. It's accessible from both the bioreserve and from the Onomea Bay Trail Head off of Old Mamalahoa Hwy (the road that leads to the bioreserve entrance). This particular photo is taken from inside the bioreserve, but prior to our visit there, we walked down the trail to catch the views and walk down to where Alakahi Stream feeds into the ocean. I was trying to catch moments where the water was running off of the rock after a wave crashed into it, but this one ended up being my favorite.
