the OBX Beach Bum

the OBX Beach Bum Oh sure, there are plenty of beach bums on the OBX, but I'm the legendary OBXBeachBum. No kidding.

Roy Edlund is a prolific chronicler of life via photographic wonderment of the Outer Banks under the assumed name “the OBX Beach Bum.”

On my way to Raleigh, wanted to share this photo from my Dodging Shadows folder.

I just love black and white photos.

Does that make me crazy? Probably.

Time to pick up my girlfriend.

Like a lot of you, the beach is where I find peace.

Watching these pelicans gliding by, perfectly content in their own rhythm and utterly indifferent to my worries, the ocean in its enormity. Feeling the insignificance is liberating.

Just getting to witness the spectacle of it all for a little while, blurring the line between where I exist as that spectator and where I don't exist.

A part of the landscape, not the center of it, which means you get to just be.

I need that kind of peace.

It's Monday. Gas prices jumped on Friday, I'm guessing for Labor Day.

Do you ever wonder why gas prices can jump 20 cents overnight at the hint of possible disruption 6800 miles from here, but then it takes a few weeks for the price to drop a couple of cents like they're doing us a favor?

Sorry, I just keep watching my bank balance dwindle every time I fill up my tank and it's starting to take a toll on my psyche.

This is from my surreal sky collection.

The memory of when this was my backyard is fading.

Come to think of it, all my memories are fading into obscurity.

I was listening to a podcast this morning, in the background, as I worked on my calendar. This podcaster made a claim that he thought our country had devolved into a hedonistic society.

An unsatiated mob with a view that treats pleasure as the highest good and the main goal of life.

I half-nodded in agreement, but it started my day with a little philosophical tug of war in my brain concerning hedonism.

I mean, how does it apply to people that get their pleasure from the beach. Which I count myself as fully ensconced in that camp.

Well, I'm no scholar but I've read some things, and this just bugged me. So, I set out to calm my brain and scratch the itch.

Like most things, how a thing started a couple of thousand years ago barely resembles what it has become today.

Epicurus started school in 306BC called the Garden. He taught the highest good was pleasure.

Let's just say he didn't win over the other philosophers.

He withdrew from ambition and politics, kept a small circle of friends, tended his garden.

He thought most of what people chase produces more pain than pleasure, so the smart move was to want less, not consume more.

The greatest pleasures, to him, were the absence of bodily pain and the quieting of a restless mind. That's the founder of hedonism.

He sounds like a beach bum.

So what this guy was describing isn't pleasure-seeking at all, it's consumption, which only wears pleasure's clothes.

The OBX Beach Bum, the purest kind of hedonist.

Did you ever notice how when you're standing in the ocean and you reach down and try to grab the water that you end up with a fistful of nothing?

But then the ocean is still all around you.

I think there's a beach bum code in there somewhere.

"A fistful of nothing" is the illusion of control. You close your hand expecting to have caught something, and the closing is the exact move that guarantees you didn't.

The grip and the emptiness are the same gesture.

I'll have to give this a think.

I fully intended a beach trip this morning to check out the Outer Banks Pro surf contest at Jennette's Pier.

I got up early, checked the weather, started the coffee maker, and then I remembered.

The AC had stopped working in my van after dropping Sandie off in Raleigh. I assumed a simple recharge would fix it. Nope.

Well, that's what I get for assuming.

Turns out its more complicated and a bit outside my expertise and current state of flexibility.

Anyway, I don't need AC, I'm not that far gone, but once I heard how much it was going to cost to fix, well, my plans needed to change.

I decided to put some work in on finishing up my 2027 calendar today.

You know, things happen that are beyond our control all the time, the easy thing would be to say is you need to just let it go. But maybe releasing isn't a thing you do so much as a thing you stop doing.

I had this thought as I watched the sun rise from its slumber, that the sun was devouring the night.

Small bites to start.

Until it is full and then it settles into its comfortable chair and starts to nap.

As it slumbers the night escapes, and then little by little begins to devour the day.

The things I think about when I don't have Sandie around to keep me in check.

Hoping your day is filled to the brim with happy things and comfort.

A trip to the beach always calms my mind.

Sandie is spending a week in the Yukon with her sisters and I have a feeling it's going to be a very long week.

We've not spent a lot of time apart in 45 years and the dread is upon me as I write this.

Sure, I've got plenty to do to keep occupied, I'm even planning a couple of trips to the beach which will help with calming my mind and be an escape from an empty house.

Well, I have to drive her to the airport in Raleigh this morning.

Wish me luck. ❤️
