Check out this article from Redfin with tips on how to create a photography studio in your home! You'll see our expert tip at #14.

Creating our Barn Studio was a dream since we bought our home in 2014. Our home had a historic 1880's timber-frame barn in the back yard that served as a home for partying squirrels, seriously, there had to be 20 squirrels living in the barn. The barn was a mess! the barn board siding was rotted, the beams had powder post beetle damage, and when it rained outside... it also rained inside. We considered tearing down the barn and building a new structure knowing this option would be more cost-effective but we just couldn't choose this route due to our passion for classic timber-frame barns with hand-hewn beams. We decided to take the difficult road and completely renovate the barn. With years of blood sweat and tears, we replaced everything except for the timber-frame... well, maybe we replaced a few sections of that too. In January of 2018 we opened our barn studio. I still need to pinch myself walking into the space.

So what is the tip here!?: Tip 1. Evict the squirrels Tip 2. Take the difficult route to add character to your studio! It's beneficial to have a blank slate studio (Bare white or black walls) that can be modified to fit different needs but don't forget about your passions, your style, and the textures that you love - this will be your differentiator in a crowded market. Hand-hewn beams and a steam locomotive bell are two hints of our passions that fill the studio. My Grandfather and Great Uncle worked on the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad and I love inviting clients to ring the powerful bell when a successful shoot wraps!
