The final preparations before heading to Summerville, GA.

Southern Railway 4501 is a 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam locomotive built in October 1911 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Southern Railway. 4501 served the Southern hauling freight until being retired in 1964.

The engine appeared in many movies and television shows. In the TV show Christy, the engine pulled the train that took the main character from her home in Asheville to the fictional town of Cutter Gap, TN.

4501 is passing the former Peerless Woolen Mills in Rossville, GA.

For decades, No. 4501 proudly wore the passenger colors of the Southern Railway, carrying riders across the Southeast and beyond. From local excursions to long-distance trips, her green livery became a symbol of steam’s living legacy.

For many guests, this paint isn’t just a color — it’s a memory. It represents first train rides, family traditions, and the unmistakable presence of steam in motion.

“In a year when we’re celebrating the museum’s 65th anniversary and the locomotive’s 115th birthday, it feels only right for her to come back in Southern Railway passenger livery for a limited celebratory season,” said Penelope Soule Gault, TVRM spokeswoman.

#205 is traveling on the heights above the Santium River near Stayton Oregon.

Engine 205 was built in 1924 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, PA for the San Joaquin and Eastern Railroad and used by the railroad until it shut down in 1933.

Following the closure of the SJ&E the locomotive was sold to the Santa Maria Valley RR and moved to Santa Maria, CA. The 205 operated on the SMV until 1950 when it was donated to the city of Santa Maria and placed on display in 1950.

In 1983 the 205 was sold to George Lavacot and moved to Independence OR. where the restoration of the locomotive began. George and a group of friends met regularly over the following 38 years to bring 205 back to life.

In 2021, following the successful restoration of the engine, George sold the engine to the Albany and Eastern Railroad.
