The sky was a crazy purple in Vermont last week just before sunrise. Then the sun came out for a small moment and illuminated the Tinker Farm perfectly. And as a bonus I got to meet KH_Vermont LLC

American Bittern

(This post started out as a complaint about how I went someplace to see some unique birds and only saw things that I didn’t have to drive over 4 hours to see but upon looking at my photos I saw way more than I thought!)

I was promised wood ducks, mallards, green-winged teal, ring-necked ducks, great blue heron’s (in fact Vermont’s largest breeding rookery), ospreys, bald eagles, pied-billed grebes, American bitterns, norther harriers, Virginia rails, northern waterthrushes, American redstarts, chestnut-sided warblers, pileated woodpeckers, yellow-bellied sapsuckers, bobolinks, savannah sparrows, swamp sparrows and marsh wrens on my many miles of hiking the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge last week. You want to know what I saw? American goldfinch (I have those in my back yard), turkey vultures (also have a ton of them around my house and gross), cedar waxing, empidonax flycatcher (which are pretty cool but also have them in my neighborhood), eastern kingbird, red-eyed viero, black-capped chickadee, song sparrow, belted kingfisher, and a seagull.

TWO times as I came around the bend of the same small swampy area (very quietly and slowly) I saw a giant brown bird fly away too quickly for me to get my focus on as it flew deep into the reeds. It was definitely the most unique thing was going to see and I totally missed a shot of it….until I actually LOOKED AT MY PHOTOS! Look at this bird!!!

Alfalfa Farm Cellars

I’ve been waiting for a killer sunrise to head to this location. On Father’s Day we met up with our dads and kids to celebrate with some beer and whoopee pies. I asked a manager if it would be ok to randomly come to the property when the sky cooperated and he said “sure”!

Last night there was some aurora predicted so I wanted to head north a bit as a staging area in case I needed to go further in the event of a substorm. Portland is where I set up shop (AKA charging my car and singing seven songs at the east ender while waiting for aurora data to emerge). Nothing ever came of the lights so I started to drive home. I was so exhausted I had to keep pulling over to sleep. I woke up at some point and realized that if I just stayed out another two hours I could catch a potentially killer sunrise. I continued my nap and woke up in time to get to Alfalfa farm exactly an hour before sunrise to find tons of pink already happening. The sky did not disappoint.

Adam Silverman is a jaw droppingly amazing photographer and since I was up in his territory I wanted to explore some new places. His recent sunflower field pictures were drool worthy so I drove mostly to Canada to find them. They were dead. Go check his out.
