Somewhere between the trail and the trees, Nighthorn stopped looking like a costume.

That was the moment I was looking for.

Not someone wearing armor.

Someone who belongs in it.

The studio is where a piece is built.

The wild is where you find out what it became.

Would you take a handmade costume like this into the wild for a photoshoot?

A costume can tell you what someone is wearing.

Character tells you why.

Nighthorn was never meant to be just armor, fabric, straps, and hardware. Those were the vocabulary.

The character was the sentence.

Every choice in the design was made to build someone who feels capable, grounded, a little dangerous, and completely at home in the wild.

Then came the part no pattern could solve:

becoming her.

That is where costume becomes character. 🖤🪡

She wasn’t built for a costume rack.

Nighthorn was built to move through the world.

There is something different about seeing a handmade piece outside the studio. The materials catch different light. The layers move differently. The landscape becomes part of the composition.

That’s when the design gets its final test.

Not under studio lights.

Out there.

The details are rarely the part people notice first.

They’re usually the part that took the longest.

The neckline. The straps. The layers. The way the costume frames the body and builds the character’s silhouette.

Costume design lives in those decisions.

The big shapes tell you who you’re looking at.

The small ones make you believe her.

What’s the first costume detail your eye goes looking for? 🖤🪡

A costume has to move.

Nighthorn wasn’t built to stand still.

She had to walk trails, climb over rocks, turn, sit, reach, bend, and exist in an actual landscape without the costume fighting the person wearing it.

That’s one of the less glamorous parts of costume construction: making the beautiful thing functional.

Every strap, seam, closure, layer, and structural element has a job.

Because the moment the character steps out of the studio, the costume has to become more than a finished object.

It has to become wearable.

When you look at a costume, what do you notice first: the silhouette, the details, or how it’s constructed? 🪡🌲

Before the finished photograph, there is the mess.

Reference images. Material tests. Half-finished ideas. Problem-solving. Pieces that work beautifully, pieces that absolutely do not, and the occasional moment of staring at something for ten minutes wondering why it refuses to cooperate.

That is the part of costume making most people never see.

Nighthorn didn’t appear fully formed.

She was built, tested, adjusted, rebuilt, and eventually taken outside to see whether the character could hold her own in the real world.

The finished image is the evidence.

The process is the story. 🖤🪡

A wearable story stitched from shadow, memory, and blooming things.

This is only the beginning.
