I am lucky to have had the opportunity to collaborate with a talented artist and my new friend, Aaron Goulding. After recently seeing his stunning aerial photography, I reached out to him to collaborate in visually acknowledging the current situation for students. This pandemic gave them no warning- they left UCSD with no time for closure and no opportunity to say goodbye to their campus family of roommates, mentors and professors. Living here on campus, I found myself in a scary new reality of supporting my students through the rapid process of moving out and going home. I felt the weight of their absence: a chilling silence in a normally vibrant, bustling community. I sensed a deep loss for the epic, graduating class of 2020, and the gravity of major traditions, celebratory events and grad photo shoots, now delayed or canceled. My vision for this project was to remind folks that despite our fear and frustration, there is hope everywhere. Our goal was to visually juxtapose the emotion of an otherwise energetic campus with a campus that is now empty, cold, and patiently awaiting the return of student vibrance.
Aaron's aerial captures are incredible, guiding us through a new perspective of an empty campus, while my portraits hope to inspire an appreciation for the day when we will return. I hope that you all feel the emotion of HOPE in this film. To our students and graduating seniors, and we are still here for you. Thank you for always shining bright, even during our darkest hours.
