I’m not lugging around my camera gear as much as I used to, some iPhone pics quickly edited with native phone adjustments. I’m finding that I am appreciating nature a little differently focusing less on the visual craft of photography and more on locking the moments and senses into my memory. I have definitely not lost the passion and craft of capturing the moment - and looking for new and alternate ways to create. I’ve thought about getting back into painting and perhaps something like miniature painting in nature or something.

Anyway here are some of my favorite quick snaps in the mountains in Utah in the middle of Summer. A bit of an untapped location for many folks. Check the location tagged if you’re curious.

It’s been an exciting day launching my Bora Bora NFTs on - so much encouragement from the community and my IG peeps. I have one item sold and a bunch of people asking questions. What’ll it be? I’ll take a glowing sunrise, on the rocks thanks bartender 🔥 🌟🧊

This is one of my favorite spots to shoot and favorite compositions in my local area, but the perfect shot eludes me. Timing the exact sunrise time with the exact tide with exact waves so water is spilling into this tidepool in the foreground is a near impossible dream. But I shall keep trying… one day 😁

There are a bunch of lush mountain houses to my left that get to see this beautiful view every day. Imagine this in summer, with lush hues in fall, and packed with snow in winter - must be nice 😊

- when your images look flat play with light by accentuating what’s already there. Break your image into layers of depth and create contrasting depth through light. This will bring your flat images to life like a popup greeting card 🙌

Apparently there are 2000 lakes in the Eastern Sierra region, but with such dry weather lately, most of those are just oversized puddles. We really could use a wet season this fall/winter 🤞

I’ll post a before and after of this one in my stories - I did some pretty heavy editing to capture the story and mood I was feeling.

- when scouting for a shot, do your best to block the part of your brain that tells you what’s in front of you. Look for shapes and colors - that’s it! When you start to see shapes and colors and light creating a nice flow, balance, and harmony, you can find something interesting almost anywhere. - I have a bunch of photos dropping soon from this trip. It took me a while to find my groove editing for reasons I’ve described below, but I’m excited to finally share.

- shooting rocks is super fun but it’s so easy to click and just get underwhelming blobs that don’t do justice to what your eye saw. There’s so much detail and nuance in shapes and leading lines and it’s important to really look for interest. When editing, over exaggerate the light and shadows to try prevent a flat looking image. Don’t get me wrong, great natural light will always win but in most cases, the raw image won’t look as spectacular as you remember and you’ll have to bring some of that back.

This time of year, catching sunrises like this on the OC coast is rare - June Gloom marine layer sets in each morning and doesn’t clear until mid morning or lunch... but in a rare occasion it breaks early and we can get ☝️this.

- two top tips for shooting reflections 1) get your camera as low as possible so the water or surface reflecting fills up as much of the frame as possible 2) using a circular polarizer filter on your lens gives you the ability to rotate the filter and adjust how much reflection vs how much you can see through the water. That extra level of creative control can make a shot.

#3 from my deliciously crispy mountain air glades plug-in photo trip 😁

- whenever I approach my editing I start with one simple question: “what story do I want to tell”. From there it gives me a consistent north start for whatever comes next. For example, the story in my mind here was “I want to share the stillness, the contrast of the bright sun as it softly gave the clouds life, and I want to show how there is so much detail in nature from every tiny pebble to every tee and mountain”. That gave me a framework for how soft, how sharp, how contrasted, where I wanted elements to be subtle vs pop. What color temperate told the story best. Start with the story that lives in your memory when you took the photo.

A popular fishing spot in the Eastern Sierra because of how many delicious mosquitoes 🦟 hover over the lakes. Bug repellent recommended.

- my has become one of my favorite ultra wide lenses. It’s tack sharp and is about as wide as you can get before there’s too much unnatural distortion (although I do love playing with distortion a lot). In this case 15mm was perfect because I had to point the lens downward to get the log in frame, but with wide lenses this will start to distort tall objects like trees. You can see by the tree on the left it’s getting pretty extremely angled, any more and I may have to do some distortion correction and lose a lot of detail in the frame.
