My piece “Family of Four” was selected for “AMPED: Turn Up for the Arts,” a new exhibition presented by Creative Pinellas that will open during its annual fundraiser party on Sept. 5 from 6-10 PM at the FloridaRAMA gallery in the Warehouse Arts District Association
"Family of Four" is a photo I took from my childhood bedroom in Germany with a long lens pointed at the fields behind my parents' house after my father was diagnosed with ALS and we, a family of four (my father, my mother, my brother and me) were facing incredible uncertainty... but when I saw this view through my lens I was certain we each would stand strong as the united individuals we have always been, no matter what comes.
When I see this photo, I see the resilience of the Westphals and of how strong and loving and united we have been even as we had to weather our shared and individual challenges of the last 2 years, including my father's death.
This photo is part of the AMPED exhibit as a 16 x 24 inch archival pigment print on Photo Rag Baryta paper in a cedar wood float frame hand-build by Scott Solary, who together with me makes a family of two - and who also has artwork in the exhibit.
Considering the extra resilience Creative Pinellas and local artists have had to muster up this last year, this seemed like a good fit.
I hope whoever makes this photo theirs, they will gain a lot of strength from it, too!
The AMPED exhibition is a group show featuring 50 artists from Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. All artworks will be for sale and proceeds will benefit each artist and Creative Pinellas.
The exhibit will be on view at the FloridaRAMA Gallery Sept. 5 - Nov. 1, 2026.
