Lifer Bell’s Vireo! It didn’t pop out of the brush for long, but what a beautiful little bird once it did.

Thanks to Dan M. for calling this one out.

This Laughing Gull was strutting around the beach like it owned the place, knowing that it was the fanciest gull around. And who could blame him?

With their bold yellow chests and striking unique black necklaces (each bird’s is unique, like a fingerprint), Canada warblers are one of the easiest warblers to identify but one of the tougher ones to find. They are uncommon and pretty skulky birds. They love to hang in the dense underbrush and rarely pop out. I was walking one of my favorite spots for warblers—the Daniel Wright Woods bridges—and a couple of them popped up into the open and started singing boldly. They are definitely one of my favorite warblers.

One of the cool parts about living so close to the Des Plaines River is my proximity to awesome forest preserves that provide an attractive migratory flyway for many cool birds, but it also provides an attractive breeding ground for some, like this hooded warbler. This was my first time seeing one of these guys. Such a calm, awesome bird. He was singing happily and posing for us right next to the trail. We are at the very north end of their breeding grounds, so sightings of this species are uncommon.

Finally had a chance to visit my dear friend Pepper. He’s looking very handsome and defending his territory fiercely from other birds. He’s the best plover dad. Just needs a lovely lady plover to touch down and make a connection.

A couple of ruddy turnstones and a sanderling also added because shorebirds are the best.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to help lead a joint bird walk with Lake Bluff Open Lands Association and Lake County Audubon Society at the beautiful Crab Tree Farm. This is a spectacular private property and they were gracious enough to let us check it out. We had many first time birders in our group, and it seemed like everyone was curious and very interested in learning about the different birds passing through the area.

The highlights for me were a couple of Wilson’s warblers and a beautiful Cape May warbler. It’s always challenging getting new birders on warblers, but these birds were pretty accommodating and allowed our group to watch them for a bit. Very cool.

Thanks to Lake Bluff Open Lands and Crab Tree Farm for hosting us!

A little splash of big color, the Blackburnian warbler stands out among the rest of the tree hoppers with its bright orange colors. Another personal favorite, but a much trickier one to see and photograph because they very much prefer the tree canopies. You’re more likely to hear these guys before you see them, but if you see a little bird hopping around high in the trees this time of year, it’s worth a closer look…you might get a pleasant surprise.

We are in peak spring migration here in Chicagoland, and all sorts of little warblers are passing through. Magnolia warblers are one of my personal favorites. They are so pretty, and they are not shy about popping down to eye-level, which makes for some great looks. I’m always a little sad when these little guys leave, so I’m making the most of the time while they’re here!

We stumbled upon this very pretty golden-winged warbler hopping around the DPRT. You never know what could pop up during migration.

Extra thankful for Lake County Forest Preserves’ awesome trails this time of year.
