People assume beautiful portraits happen because someone is naturally photogenic.

And yes, sometimes that's true.

But most of the time, you're seeing the result of hundreds of small decisions.

Where you stand.
What your hands are doing.
How the light hits your face.
The moment I ask you to look down instead of at the camera.

You don't need to know what to do.

That's my job.

The harder part is letting yourself be seen.

Because being photographed is vulnerable.

Not because you're standing in front of a camera.

Because you're standing in front of another person.

And that requires trust.

Not the kind of trust that's given immediately.

The kind that's earned, little by little, throughout a session.

A lot of parents apologize during newborn sessions.

For feeding the baby again.
For needing a minute.
For the baby staying awake longer than expected.

Meanwhile I’m standing there thinking:
your baby is twelve days old.

Of course they want held.
Of course they want to eat every hour.
Of course the session pauses and starts and changes direction.

That’s what newborn life actually looks like, and your session doesn't magically make all of that stop.

The baby still needs you.
You’re still learning each other.
The rhythms of your family are still forming in real time.

And honestly, some of the most beautiful photographs happen right in the middle of that.

I've noticed a few new faces around here, so I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.

I'm Becky. I'm a newborn, maternity, and little years photographer based in the Lancaster area. I've been doing this for over 15 years, starting with weddings and eventually finding my way to families, which is where I've always belonged. Over that time I've photographed so many families, newborns, and expecting mothers, and I've built my entire approach around one thing: making photographs that still matter decades from now, and not just your latest social media post.

My sessions are baby led and naturally posed. I work with soft, timeless colors and let things unfold at whatever pace the baby needs. Flowers find their way into my work often, and as an avid gardener I love when they do.

Kids don't scare me either, with two wild boys of my own. The wiggly ones, the shy ones, the ones who want nothing to do with the camera, I genuinely enjoy all of them. I understand how little kids' brains work and how to meet them where they are, so a hard session doesn't rattle me. It just means we're paying closer attention.

I also believe photographs should live somewhere you can actually see them. Not in a folder on your phone, not in a digital gallery you open once. On your walls, in an album, somewhere that reminds you who you were in this season. We live in an age where everything feels temporary and replaceable. Your family isn't, and neither are these years. That's why I offer framing and albums alongside every session, because the work doesn't stop when the camera does.

I'm South Jersey born and found my way to Lancaster as a young adult. I got married at 22, which some people raise an eyebrow at, but it has been the best choice I've ever made. There's something really good about growing up alongside your best friend. We're in our 30s now with two boys, 10 and 7, and I love the life we've built here. My faith is central to who I am and shapes everything, including my work.

Lancaster suits me. I garden, I'm outside as much as I can be, and this place has felt like home from the beginning.

Glad you're here.

The outfit here on this little man? It's perfect. And guess what? It's not from the client closet.

That outfit belonged to his momma when she was a baby.

The client closet is there for your convenience and to take a little bit of the overwhelm out of planning your session, but when you have something like this it's a no-brainer.

The sentimental value here makes their images even more impactful, and I will always recommend something like this compared to anything else.

The newborn stage is the only time in your life when doing absolutely nothing feels like everything.

Just holding them. Just being the person they need. Just existing in that small, quiet world the two of you made together.

It doesn't last. You know that already. They might not even be here yet, but you feel it.

You've probably had every other parent you've spoken to tell you the same.

So when should a newborn session happen? When should you book?

Booking can either take place around the same time you're booking your maternity session (mid-second trimester for a session in your third trimester), but it's always best case scenario to book before your baby arrives.

Newborn sessions are scheduled approximately two weeks from your due date, but I recommend planning for your session to be around one-two weeks old.

We want as many details as possible taken care of before the baby arrives, because you'll be too busy caring for yourself and your brand new baby to think about much else. You'll be able to come to the studio, view the backdrops, try on dresses, browse the children's client closet.. really envision what you want before the details are too overwhelming.

Happy mother's day, friends!

I hope that you fellow moms enjoyed your day and felt especially loved.

I spent the weekend in my garden and it's exactly what I needed. My husband handled literally everything else and I am feeling so thankful and blessed.

He even told me to buy whatever I wanted at the nursery and handled the kids while I browsed. When I came back to get them, he told me to buy more. I meannn.... 😍

The newborn stage is the one season that deserves the most photographs and ends up with the fewest good ones.

That's not because you didn't try. That's because you were surviving. Running on nothing, figuring out who you all are to each other, living in that strange blurry time where Tuesday and Thursday feel the same.

And in the middle of all of that your baby fits against your chest in a way they will never fit again. Your partner looks at you the way he's looking at you right now. The three of you are becoming a family for the very first time.

It is extraordinary. And you are too tired to know it.

That's why this work exists. Not to make you look a certain way. Not to perform something for Instagram. To catch what is actually happening in that room while it's happening.

So that ten years from now you can see it clearly.

You'll want proof of this. Let's make it while there's still time.

You're a good mom.
Not because everything is going right.

Because you're still here, still trying, still caring about the right things.

I know that's easy to say and hard to feel.

Especially on the days when you're running on nothing
and everyone still needs something from you and you lie in bed at night wondering if you're getting any of this right.

But I want to say it anyway.

Because I think sometimes we need to hear it from someone who isn't obligated to say it.

The fact that you're even thinking about documenting this season.. that you care about leaving something behind for your children, that you want them to know they were seen.. that is not a small thing.

That is a mother who is paying attention.
Who understands that this is sacred.
Who is trying to be a good steward of something she loves.

You're already doing it.
I just want to help you have something to show for it.

Outfit stress is real. Here's what I've found actually works.

Swipe through for a simple guide.. and if you'd rather just show up and use the client closet, that's what it's there for.
