Trilliums - the stars of the wildflower show at Shenk's Ferry

Trilliums are widely distributed across the Eastern US forests. Most places, if you come across one it is a special treat. I have seen a few places where there are more, a few dozen or so, but I have never seen the abundance that you see at Shenks Ferry in Lancaster County anywhere else. We are talking thousands. I took a number of shots of these beauties, shared below.

Wildflowers from Shenk's Ferry, Lancaster County on Tuesday morning

This is most of the flower species I saw. There were a few more that I didn't photograph: Bishop's Cap, various violets.

Shenk's Ferry Wildflower Preserve, Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, Pa

In Lancaster County we are blessed with many things: beautiful farmland, historic city and towns, and many natural areas. One such blessing is Shenks Ferry, a 92 acre site administered by Lancaster Conservancy adjacent to the Susquehanna River in the southern part of the county. Formerly an industrial site including a grist mill, an iron mine, and a dynamite factory. Only vestiges of the industrial past remain now. The trail through the preserve follows the roadbed from a narrow gauge railroad used by the mine along Grubb Run for about 1/2 mile. The unique geology of the site allows for the extraordinary profusion of wildflowers every Spring. I took advantage of the beautiful 70 degree weather on Tuesday morning and captured many image. I will share some of them in this post and more, including most of the wildflower species I saw, in subsequent posts.

Early Spring in Lancaster County

Yesterday (Thursday) morning I took a drive in the nearby farmland since the rain had stopped for the first time in days. Foggy at first the Sun did come out for a while, but by late afternoon there was more rain and hail.

Spring ahead

This time of year when it seems that everything you see outside is pale gray, tan, or brown, the earliest Spring flowers provide a welcome spark of color and the promise of nicer days to come. This morning I found a few while walking around my neighborhood. And yes, next Sunday we "spring ahead" to daylight savings time.

Fresh snow in Landis Woods, Neffsville, Pa

I always like the look of new snow on trees and bushes. It has been a while since I got out to shoot some photos when it is available. It didn't snow at all last year and even with several modest snowfalls this winter there are practical obstacles; having to clear my driveway, deck, and walkways, the state of the roads and parking, my own diminished ambition, etc. Yesterday provided an exception. We had 3 or so inches of snow overnite (on top of some remaining snow from earlier in the week) but remarkably my driveway, sidewalks, and the roads were completely clear. As soon as I finished my breakfast I grabbed my camera and headed to Landis Woods, a township park near my house. Here are some images I came home with.

More waterfowl from Middle Creek in Northern Lancaster County - not Snow Geese
Some images from Tuesday afternoon featuring other species, also there in smaller numbers if you look for them. Among these are several shots of Common Mergansers, a diving, fish-eating bird with serrated bills. I always find them interesting.

Snow Geese at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area - Northern Lancaster County - Feb 6, afternoon.

It has been a long time since I posted anything: I haven't shot any photos for a while. I was sick most of December and January. Better now and blessed with some sunny days after a very gloomy January I headed out to Middle Creek. I have photographed the migrating geese that congregate there many times before but it doesn't get old. There were a few thousand geese on hand when I first arrived aroud 4:00, fewer than the huge peaks in some past years, but still worthwhile. Here are some images. More tomorrow of other waterfowl and nice afternoon light.

Milkweed in full fluff at Chestnut Grove Natural Area.

On Tuesday afternoon I saw acres of milkweed lit by the late afternoon sun. A great subject with the silky "parachutes" on the seeds contrasting with the rough, dry, gray seed pods.

Late color in Lancaster County

On Tuesday afternoon, I looked out my front door (first photo), and seeing the kaliedoscope of colors I decided to take a drive to shoot some Autumn color photos. I headed down Prospect Road in Manor Township, ending up at Chestnut Grove Natural Area, and captured some nice images. It won't be long before the colors are gone.
