September 11, 2026.

Last night, on the 25th anniversary of September 11, New York remembered.

From One World Trade Center glowing red, white and blue to the American flag and a firefighter’s helmet illuminating the skyline across Midtown, reminders were everywhere.

I spent part of the night behind my camera documenting them.

Twenty-five years have passed, but some things shouldn’t fade with time.

The lights eventually go dark. The date changes. We remember anyway.

2,977 lives.

Never forgotten. 🇺🇸

25 years.

Every September 11, these lights rise above New York in remembrance of 2,977 lives that were taken.

I’ve photographed this skyline from across the Hudson more times than I can count. But looking across that water at these beams is different. You aren’t just photographing light. You’re photographing what that light represents.

September 11 also happens to be my birthday.

Today I turn 38.

And after everything I’ve been through, getting older means something very different to me than it once did.

There was a time in my life when I wasn’t doing much to make sure I saw another birthday. Addiction nearly took that opportunity away from me more than once. Recovery gave me the chance to keep getting older — and I’ve learned that growing older is a privilege we’re never promised.

Photography became part of that life, too. It taught me to slow down. To pay attention. To appreciate moments while they’re actually happening instead of realizing their value after they’re gone.

So today I’m grateful to be 38. Grateful to be 16 years clean. Grateful that I still get to pick up a camera and see where life takes me next.

But before I celebrate another year of my own life, I remember the people who were denied another year of theirs.

2,977 lives.

25 years.

Never forgotten. 🇺🇸

Sometimes you don’t need the whole skyline.

I’ve photographed New York more times than I could count, but I’m still looking for different ways to see the same places.

This time, it was the light at the top of One World Trade that caught my attention.

Sometimes the photograph is just one small piece of a much bigger view.

There’s something different about seeing a place like this early in the morning.

The sun had just come up, the light was beginning to reach the mountains, and everything still felt quiet.

I remember looking at this scene and knowing I didn’t need to do much with it. The mountains, the river, the first light of the day — everything was already there.

Sometimes photography is less about creating the moment and more about being there when it happens.

I think photography has made me pay attention differently.

Not everything needs to be planned. Not everything needs to be posed.

Sometimes something catches my eye, I raise the camera, and that’s it.

This was one of those times.

But looking at this photograph afterward made me think about the paths we take in life.

None of us really knows where someone else’s road has taken them, what they’ve had to walk through, or what it took for them to get where they are.

And maybe that’s part of the reason we shouldn’t be ashamed of the difficult parts of our own path.

Because something you struggled through might eventually become the light that helps someone else find their way.

Never judge the road you’ve never traveled.

I went out to photograph the skyline.

Then I noticed this.

That’s one of the things I love most about photography. You can leave the house looking for one photograph and come home with something completely different.

Sometimes the picture you didn’t plan is the one you remember.

Sometimes the photograph isn’t the place. It’s the moment happening inside of it.

I’ve always been drawn to the moments people don’t pose for. The ones that happen naturally, and disappear just as quickly as they came.

I happened to have my camera ready for this one.

That’s usually when people stop posing and start being themselves.

Those are the moments I’m looking for.
