On the banks of the Irrawaddy River, Bagan, Myanmar.

In support of the people of Myanmar, I’m posting a series of photographs from my travels there last year and asking anyone who can, to make a donation to Fortify Rights and/or Partners Asia. Both are doing important work in support of the pro-democracy movement there and need all the international support they can get.

In support of the people of Myanmar, I will be posting a series of photographs from my travels there last year and asking anyone who can, to donate to Fortify Rights and/or Partners Asia.



Last year, before the pandemic was in full swing, I had the privilege of traveling for several weeks through Myanmar. Before deciding to go, I carefully considered the ethical ramifications of visiting a country with an oppressive and genocidal government and consulted a number of people and sources with more direct knowledge of the country and region than I.

My conclusion was that while the government was clearly not something I wanted to support, the people of Myanmar were and are a very different story. Visiting tourists not only provide local people with new economic opportunity that could eventually reduce the power of the government, but also a chance to connect with cultures and ideas from beyond their borders. Traveling for me is largely about being exposed to different ways of seeing and being in the world and if I can provide that experience to my hosts in return, this feels like a very meaningful exchange indeed!

My experience traveling in Myanmar confirmed these sentiments. I had many meaningful and genuine encounters with locals of all stripes and came away with a deep appreciation for this place and what it could and should be.
