How did I get so lucky?

Every time I stand in front of a crew like this, I’m reminded that my camera has given me a gift far greater than photographs. It has given me a front-row seat to witness some of the most incredible people I’ll ever know.

The public sees the lights, the sirens, and the uniform. I get to see the people behind them, the laughter after a hard call, the weight they carry that no one talks about, the friendships that feel more like family, and the quiet strength it takes to keep showing up day after day.

There are moments my camera captures and moments it never could. The sacrifices. The heartbreak. The courage. The humanity.

To be trusted with these stories is something I will never take for granted. Every photograph is a reminder of why I love what I do and why these men and women deserve to be seen.

Some days I look around and wonder how I got so lucky to be a small part of this world.

First responders don’t just respond to emergencies—we step into moments most people will never have to see.

We arrive when life is already falling apart. When something has already gone wrong. When there’s chaos, confusion, panic, silence… and sometimes, nothing we can do changes the outcome. We see people on what may be the worst day of their lives, and often, we’re there for the very last moment of it.

Seeing death doesn’t make you numb. It changes you in ways you can’t always explain. You learn how to stay focused, how to keep moving, how to do your job when everything inside you is telling you to feel. But the truth is, those scenes don’t just disappear when the call is over. They stay with you. In quiet moments. In the drive home. In the nights you don’t talk about.

People don’t always see that part of the job … the weight it leaves behind. The faces you remember. The families you can’t forget. The calls that replay in your mind long after the radio goes silent. You learn to function with it, but you don’t always learn how to set it down.

And still, you show up again. For the next call. For the next stranger. For the next moment someone needs help when everything is falling apart. Not because it gets easier, but because it matters.

First responders carry more than a title. We carry experiences that shape how we see life, love, and loss. And somewhere in all of it, we learn to hold onto the good a little tighter, because we’ve seen how quickly it can be gone.

EMS Week hits a little different when you’ve watched the years stack up in photos and faces.🚑🚨

From the old images—tired eyes, worn gear, nights that felt endless—to the new EMTs stepping in with the same fire, the same courage, and the same calling… it all comes full circle.

The uniforms may change, the crews may rotate, but the heart behind EMS never does. It’s late-night calls, quiet moments in the back of an ambulance, and showing up when everything feels like it’s falling apart for someone else.

To the ones who came before, who built the foundation with grit and sacrifice, you’re still here in every shift.

And to the ones just starting out … welcome to something that will challenge you, break you down, and somehow still make you proud to come back the next day.

Happy EMS Week.

This week, we honor the men and women behind the badge who sacrifice so much in service to others. During National Police Week, we remember the fallen, support the living, and recognize the strength it takes to answer the call every single day.

To every officer, dispatcher, and law enforcement family — thank you for the long hours, missed holidays, silent battles, and unwavering dedication to your communities. Your courage does not go unnoticed. We remember the heroes who gave everything. We stand beside those still serving. 💙🖤
