An AI data center is seeking Colorado River water after promising it wouldn't use any.

A proposed AI data center in California's Imperial Valley has sparked controversy after requesting access to Colorado River water despite earlier pledging to rely entirely on recycled wastewater.

The developer, Imperial Valley Computer Manufacturing, is asking for approximately 880 acre-feet of water per year—around 260 million gallons annually, or 750,000 gallons every day—to support its planned AI campus.

The company initially assured local officials that the project would operate without using "a single drop" of Colorado River water by purchasing reclaimed wastewater from nearby municipalities.

However, after negotiations with local cities reportedly failed, the developer applied for water from the Imperial Irrigation District. The district denied the request, prompting the company to file a lawsuit.

Although the requested volume represents only a small fraction of the Imperial Valley's agricultural water use, it would still be enough to supply roughly 7,300 residents with water for an entire year.
