Iglesia de San Servacio-“built by Priest Francisco Hernandez on March 24, 1545. In 1705 it was demolished by appointment of Bishop Pedro de los Rios Reyes, after the desecration of such sacred building, in the so called “Crime of Mayors.”
In 1706 it was restored as we see it now, and to prevent the altar of the new church to have the same position when it was tainted, a new orientation was given to it. For this reason the church is facing the north and west, as most of the colonial temples in Yucatan, were built facing towards Rome.”

Cenotes are surface connections to underground bodies of water. They can be found all over the Yucatán peninsula. Cenote pools are often very clear since the water comes from rain water infiltrating slowly through the ground. Many of them double as public swimming holes, and some are over 100 ft deep! They are essentially a beautiful cave pool

Cizin dolls on souvenir table. I brought a couple of these home. These hand carved Cizin or “Kisin” doll represent the Mayan god of death, also known as “the stinking one”. He is often portrayed with a cigarette and represents destruction, decay, and death. In Mayan folklore, he is typically surrounded by skeletons of mortals who have passed, and found in carvings or art that displayed him dancing during war or sacrificial scenes. He was originally depicted as a skeleton with horns, Mayan traditional tunics, and a death collar made of human eyes tied together by nerve endings. After the Spanish conquest, Cizin became merged with the concept of the Christian Devil. So when you see a depiction of what we associate with the Christian idea of the devil, your actually also seeing the the Mayan lord of the underworld as well.

Tail of the Milky Way Over a lagoon in the private reserve jungle of Tulum Mexico. The groundskeeper of our beach hut saw me taking photos on the beach and asked if I would like to see the lagoon. Of course we were game! We went and watched a beautiful sunset and then came back for the stars that night. He guided us through the jungle on a tiny trail by flashlight. We could tell he was slightly nervous being out at dark, as he kept shining his light into the jungle at every noise. “Wild Jaguars and crocodiles are very popular in the area” he said through very broken English. Eventually we made it to the dock at the lagoon again and the stars were the most vivid and beautiful I have ever seen in my life.
