Living Hope Lutheran Church We are a community of faith that values the Lutheran tradition, but isn't stuck in the past. By grace we are loved and freed to live for one another.

The people in this place welcome ALL without reservation to worship God who knows us on account of the life and saving death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Friends:

The tragic loss of Roger and Kristine Bailey has shocked and pained all of us who worshipped and served with them. Roger was a leader both for our congregation and for the synod and his steady leadership was vital in both good and difficult times. Kristine was an incredible friend to all and had a true passion for sharing her faith as a Sunday School teacher.

They left our church and our community so enriched and those that counted them as friends immeasurably blessed though we are saddened now.

Memorial services will be held at Community Lutheran Church on Saturday January 17th at 11 AM.
The address is 3720 E. Tropicana Ave, Las Vegas NV 89121

You are welcomed to join us as we gather to remember and honor them and entrust them to their new lives in Christ.

A note for Reformation/Living Hope members, neighbors, and partners:

It has been about 10 months since our last worship service.

During that time the council has sold the building, made gifts for our legacy, and has embraced a new congregation that will call 580 E Saint Louis home for what we hope will be many years into the future.

Holy Trinity Eritrean Orthodox Church has bought the building from us and we keep them in prayer for the future they will have in downtown Las Vegas.

The proceeds from the sale went to a variety of placed connected to our congregational legacy of proclaiming Jesus Christ, education, diversity and helping those in need. Nearly 70% of all the proceeds have stayed in the Las Vegas area.

Beneficiaries include:

The Grand Canyon Synod ELCA (Including a fund for Las Vegas based pastoral internships)
Leadership Lab - An ELCA affiliated youth leadership event at Augustana College - Illinois
Lutheran Social Services of Nevada
Nevadans for the Common Good
Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, Las Vegas
Christ Lutheran Church, Las Vegas
New Promise Lutheran Church, St. George UT
The LGBTQ Center of Southern Nevada
Fremont Middle School, Las Vegas
Las Vegas Rescue Mission
Caridad, Las Vegas
Shine a Light Foundation
Nathan Adelson Hospice
The Kay Carl Scholarship Fund at Kay Carl Elementary

And a 300K gift to Family Promise LV which will be going toward their new service center.

Our vision for our congregation has been "The Heart of Christ in the Heart of the City." For 75 years we have been proud to worship in the Beverly Green neighborhood and to do all we can for all of Las Vegas.

Such work was a massive undertaking. Without the leadership of Patt Burton, Council President Roger Bailey, Jan Ibrahim, Helen Smith, Sarah Heinenborg, Penny Hovick, Kay Carl, Linda Birkemeyer, Dana Russell and so many others this would not have been done. Big thank you to Mary LaBarbera, our former administrative assistant, for her continued work above and beyond helping Jan, our treasurer, in closing accounts and making sure that the checks were delivered safely to their recipients. Jay Dana, of general realty group, was an excellent help as well in his knowledge of the neighborhood and the market and guidance through the process.

It is rare in our denomination for this work of closure to be done to this extent by a closing congregation but this was a sacred trust given to us by our deep and rich history of service to all of you. We continue to thank God for all of you and wish you peace and blessing along with our gratitude.

Update:

Dear friends of Christ at Reformation/Living Hope:

As of July 31st we have voted to close our congregation. It has been hard to begin to say goodbye to this place and it's incredibly rich 75 year history as the heart of Christ in the heart of the city. We welcomed so many people to Las Vegas as the area grew, and remained downtown even as so many others left in order to pursue Christ's work.

We know that this is a sad time. But we still joyfully invite you to worship and to continue giving as you are able. There is still the gospel to proclaim here. We'll have an array of gifted preachers to share that with you. We hope to operate until the end of October so that we can officially make it to 75 years. And when we do close we hope to make impactful gifts to the community around us and the wider church to honor our deep legacy of service and faithfulness.

Over the past couple of years many people have shared that it's been hard for them to know what's going on at the church, or have felt left out of major changes. For that reason it's important to me that this process be as open and transparent as possible. Please always feel free to contact myself, or council members Patt Burton, Roger Bailey, Sara Heinenborg, Helen Smith, or Kay Carl with any concerns you might have. Bishop Deborah Hutterer of the Grand Canyon Synod has also been supportive and helpful to us in this time of transition.

Reformation/Living Hope has been the part of so many faith stories, has seeded so many other places, and has been a place of deep spiritual growth and a haven for such a diverse array of people. This place was the first to extend to me a call, my wife served and flourished here, both my children were baptized here, and I learned more about Jesus than could be crammed into thousands of tomes from the saints here.

But even in the midst of sadness we confess a God who is able to turn mourning into dancing. Even as we grieve we do so as ones with abiding hope, unshakable faith, and endless love.

The church still remains forever, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Living Hope Lutheran Church
July 24, 2023

I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands, for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.

2 Timothy 1:6-7

Friends in Christ:

As a congregation we are in the midst of a very sad but incredibly important time. During the June meeting the church council voted to recommend closure of our congregation sometime this year. This information was formally shared with the congregation at a meeting on July 2nd. We presented the reasons for this decision and laid out the challenges that we have judged to make our future together difficult. The next meeting for the congregation to deliberate and vote for closure will be after worship at 1015 on Sunday July 30th.

We had a pastoral transition at the end of last year. At that time it became clear that giving would not accommodate enough funds to hire either a full time or part time pastor under current synod guidelines. Though giving did increase at the beginning of this year when the gravity of the situation became clear it was not enough for this goal nor was the level of giving sustained in subsequent months. During this time we also have operated without an interim pastor, and have dealt with multiple resignations among church council and staff.

In addition to these internal challenges we have faced mounting external obstacles as well. Church attendance across traditional mainline congregations is in steep decline across the country. Many urban churches are also going through relocation or closure. We have continued to go forward in our mission to show God’s love to this neighborhood. But at the same time growing homelessness, and rising crime rates has made operating in the heart of the city cost prohibitive. We’ve had rocks go through two windows, a burglary, and increasing vagrancy and camping on our property. When you consider both external and internal issues even if we were to call a pastor financially the arena for ministry would be a difficult uphill battle with current trends and how worn many of our staff and volunteers have been.

This recommendation has not been made lightly. The council has deliberated with the help of our bishop and advice from other clergy in the area. We make this recommendation with heavy hearts as we are always aware of the great traditions of this 75 year old congregation and the wonderful and surprisingly graceful times we have all shared in recent years as we have made Living Hope a home for our faith. We are aware as well of the proud history of engagement with ministries and social service agencies around town and the refuge this place has become for people from the LGBTQ community who have not felt welcome in other spaces, even other ELCA congregations. Even in the midst of our difficulties many have shared just how much they love this place, the preaching, the worship, the hospitality and the openness. We have done so much to stay vibrant and focused on our mission. Congregations afraid of change don’t take the risks that we have, they don’t extend a call to mission developers, they don’t extend welcome and community to all, they don’t change their name, they don’t take difficult stands. We have done all the above.

Please attend our meeting on July the 30th if you can. All will have a voice, and all members of the congregation will have a vote. This is your decision. We also need to elect a new council to work through the next steps of closure. Also, please if you are able continue to give to our community if you can. Whatever the decision we are hoping to be able to operate and pay our expenses for the next few months and to be able to leave a legacy for our congregation in both the community and the wider church. Thank you for all you have done to support us, keep us in prayer, step up and volunteer, and otherwise be a part of our life together. God might be closing a chapter in our life here, but God and the gospel of Jesus Christ are far from done with us.

We are the heart of Christ … always.

For the next three weeks we will be having a guest preacher share the Good News with us and lead worship.

Yvonne Roesel is a distance-learning student at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, who lives in Henderson. These days, she attends Community Lutheran Church. When Yvonne’s not studying, she’s probably watching Murder, She Wrote with her spouse, Tom, and two fuzzy cats, reading a good book, or planning their next adventure. “Abide with Me” is the hymn she turns to the most.

Come and join us!
