FINALLY sharing the rest of my story in returning to photography:
I’m on my knees by my bedside. Asking God for an answer. I don’t remember how long I had been praying that if there was any way for me to stay home and raise my kids, for Him to reveal it to me. As I prayed Matthew 14 popped into my head. Not the content of it, I did NOT know what story in scripture this was just by hearing Matthew 14. I picked up my Bible and turned to that chapter.
In Matthew 14:13 I found the story of Jesus feeding the 5k. This is very significant, because before God was about to confirm that He was asking me to take a BIG, SCARY step, He wanted me to know that He would provide the basics for my family. When considering returning to photography and staying home with the kids “what if we can’t afford food to FEED the kids” was always the question and fear I came back to. With a 9-5 you know about what you’ll be making every month. With a small business? Not so much.
Immediately following this story is where we find Peter stepping out of the boat in which He’s traveling to walk on the water to Jesus. The text says:
““And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.”
Matthew 14:25-32 ESV”
I started to cry as I read this. I brought this scripture to Keith and as well a few others I’d been given or told or remembered that night or recently (Philippians 4:6, Psalm 37:3-6, Matthew 17:20). I told Him I thought this was a clear answer from the Lord and asked if he agreed. He did.
Throughout the week that followed giving my 2 month notice to my job I was waffling a bit. “Was this REALLY the right decision?” The day before I planned to give my notice the sermon was all about faith and the preacher referenced multiple scriptures I’d been given. A couple within the first 5-10 minutes. Keith thought he might have to excuse himself because he was holding back laughter.
The preacher reminded me that the examples we see in scripture don’t show people stepping out with faith with the whole plan reveled to them. But they do what God had told them to do. They take the first step.
So, I did. I gave my notice to my job and reopened my photography business. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t sank multiple times since following Jesus’ instruction. But He always reaches out immediately and keeps me from drowning.
What has the Lord been asking you to do lately? Is fear keeping you back? Do you have a similar story to mine?
