Time
One day you open your eyes,
Your knees could just spring right out of bed.
Your curiosity roams free and the world feels so big.
You eat your cereal and you leave the door,
Your friends await you outside school,
and your only real worry is what they serve for lunch.
It’s almost as if you see a good world, through little eyes and you believe in magic.
You dont believe the world could ever be cruel.
You haven’t seen or experienced neglect, criticim, addiction, betrayal, loneliness, the sting of watching cancer hard at work.
Next thing you know, you open your eyes.
10 years have gone by,
Your knees ache and you procrastinate leaving the bed
Your curiosity is stationary, it doesnt want to explore.
And the world feels small.
You don’t eat breakfast anymore, you just scarf down a coffee.
No friends waiting to make you smile and laugh,
Instead you’re greeted by a clock in punch.
You worry about EVERYTHING except lunch because you can choose that.
Isn’t it funny how times change?
You blame yourself and become your own worst critic.
You’ve now experienced how cruel the world really can be.
You’ve experienced betrayal, neglect, loss, criticism, lonliness, addiction, and how sneaky cancer is.
The way you see the world now is so much different. The magic is lost
But you keep going.
You HAVE to keep going,
Because even though the world is cold,
Tomorrow will still come, and you’ll still have to open your eyes again.
Time does not stop,
And maybe,
Just maybe,
The next time you open your eyes,
The view won’t be such a drop.
