I am going to start this wedding by the ending. Imagine a DJ apologizing for putting Baby Shark in a dance floor remix in between the speeches and the couple’s first dance, only to realize the whole crowd was on the dance floor. He was not expecting that. Neither was I. Now add to the mix some Australians who flew in for their buddy and came here to party, older folks dancing on the chairs, inflatable guitars and mics, a DJ in heaven, the bride taking over the decks, and you get a hell of a fun party.

The bridesmaids first look is one of those moments that happens fast and does not repeat. You either catch it or you miss it. Fortunately it is a well known moment for a wedding photographer where we control a lot of variables. My favorite frame from this sequence is the first one. Her dad walking into the frame by accident just after finishing his first look! Not that I planned to do that photo with the restroom door in the frame, I was just following the bride on my way to set the scene up. If you know her dad, you would find that scene very representative of him. Putting myself in her shoes, I would find that photo cute of him.

She came from Louisiana, by train, and when she walked into Union Station she knew that was the place she wanted to get married. That grand hall with its beautiful light leaves nobody indifferent. The reception at the Hilton President had another kind of energy, more intimate and just right for celebrating. Kansas City knows how to throw a wedding. One of my couples told me that during their reception, guests kept coming up to ask: is he a friend of yours, or is he working?

It’s not an accident. I think of myself as a guest at the wedding who happens to have a camera. Someone with proximity and trust.

When people forget I’m working and consider me part of the celebration, they stop performing. That’s when the real photos happen.
